Mules Baseball - 1967-70
Rusty Newman lettered four years for the Mules baseball team. Despite playing during an era in which college teams played half the schedule they currently enjoy, Newman still holds the school record for career strikeouts with 236. He holds the school record for career strikeouts per nine innings (11.8), and is seventh in school history in earned run average (2.51) and 10th in innings pitched (179.3). Newman is also tied for seventh-best in Mules single-season history with 72 strikeouts in 1967. That season he also boasted an ERA of 1.86, which is tied for 10th best in Central history. That season he ranked second in NCAA Division II in strikeouts. In 1970 he was honored with the Vernon Kennedy Award as Central’s outstanding athlete
