A two-time All-American, Gatrel qualified for nationals four times, and was MIAA Champion in his weight class four times (twice at 177, twice at 190). He had a 91-22-1 career record, ranking eighth in school history in wins. Gatrel also had 399.75 team points to rank second on the Mule career list, and 42 pins to rank fifth in UCM history. Following his career, he was the Mules’ head coach for the 1981-82 season, and was named the Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year for all NCAA Divisions.
