No. 4 Mules Baseball Scores 49 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Fort Hays State Saturday

HAYS, Kan. – Fourth-ranked Central Missouri Mules baseball scored a combined 49 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Fort Hays State Tigers Saturday, April 30, at Larks Park, winning game one, 29-2 in seven innings, before taking the nightcap, 20-13.

The Mules (36-6, 29-3 MIAA) clinch the series victory with the twin bill sweep and will go for the three-game series sweep of the Tigers (4-40, 3-29 MIAA) Sunday, May 1, at 1 p.m.

Central Missouri hit seven home runs and had 13 total extra base hits as it destroyed Fort Hays State in game one, 29-2 in seven innings.

Redshirt junior John Prudhom set a new UCM baseball single-game record with six hits, going 6-for-7 with a grand slam, three doubles, seven RBIs and four runs scored while Isaiah Pani was a perfect 4-of-4 with a grand slam, four runs batted in and four runs scored, pacing the Mules at the plate in game one.

Prudhom's six hits broke the previous record of five hits in a game, which has been accomplished 39 times in program history.

Garrett Pennington homered twice and had six RBIs, and Brennen van Breusegen, Harrison Schnurbusch and Ethan Imel also belted home runs, respectively.

UCM right-handed starting pitcher Collin Jones (9-0) earned the victory in game one, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and zero walks in five innings.

Grant Schmidt was 2-for-3 with two homers, leading the Tigers in the opening contest.

Fort Hays State starter Hunter Parker (0-10) suffered the setback on the mound after giving up 11 earned runs on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

The Mules offense kept rolling in game two, scoring 20 runs on 20 hits on the way to the 20-13 triumph.

After going 2-for-2 with a home run in game one, van Breusegen went a sizzling 5-for-6 with two homers, two doubles, seven RBIs and five runs scored in the nightcap, while Prudhom went 3-for-6 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, pacing UCM in the batter's box.

Sam Tatum, Carter Young and Jacob Steele also crushed round-trippers in the win, with Tatum also roping a triple.

Central Missouri reliever Josh Bortka (3-0) picked up the win on the rubber in game two after throwing three scoreless innings and giving up just three hits with five strikeouts and no walks on 49 total pitches.

Ridge Stephens went 4-for-5 with a double and RBI, while Jenner Kehe and Ed Scott each homered and drove in four runs, pacing FHSU offensively in the second contest.

Fort Hays State starter Zach Berg (0-6) took the setback in game two, allowing 10 runs – nine earned – on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in three innings.
