ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. – Michael Chrisman,
John Prudhom and
Cole Moore homered, and
Collin Jones threw a complete-game shutout to lift ninth-ranked Central Missouri Mules baseball to its 12th straight win with a 13-0 triumph over the Newman Jets in seven innings Friday, March 18, at Tiger Ballpark.
The Mules (17-3, 11-0 MIAA) are slated to play the Jets (14-10, 4-7 MIAA) in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in Arkansas City, Kan., to wrap up the three-game MIAA series.
Chrisman went 3-for-5 with a home run and drove in a game-high four runs, while
Brennen van Breusegen compiled a trio of hits, including a triple, with three RBIs, pacing UCM at the plate.
Jones improved to 4-0 on the mound in 2022 and earned his first complete-game shutout of the season after allowing no earned runs on just two hits with zero walks and a season-high eight strikeouts in the seven-inning, run-rule win.
Central Missouri scored all 13 of its runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings on the way to the victory.
Moore got the scoring going to the Mules in the fourth when he belted a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for his third homer of the season before
Donovan Ditto smacked an RBI single to right field, driving in
Jacob Steele, and Chrisman hit an RBI single to right, plating Ditto for the 3-0 advantage.
Prudhom made it 4-0, UCM, with his team-best sixth home run of 2022 – a solo shot to dead-centerfield – in the top of the fifth.
After Ditto hit a lead-off double to left in the top of the sixth, Chrisman crushed a 2-1 offering over the right field wall for a two-run round-tripper, his second of the season, ballooning the UCM lead 6-0. van Breusegen roped an RBI triple to right-center to drive in Schnurbusch before scoring on Prudhom's RBI ground-out, increasing the Mule advantage to 8-0.
Central Missouri put the game away in the top of the seventh, igniting for five runs for the 13-0 lead.
Steele scored on an RBI fielder's choice from
Isaiah Pani for the first run of the frame prior to Chrisman slashing an RBI single to center, scoring
Garrett Pennington, and Schnurbusch doubling to left, allowing Pani to cross home plate for the second and third runs of the inning. van Breusegen provided the final two runs of the game for the Mules, driving in Schnurbusch and Chrisman with a two-RBI single to left.
Jones worked a quick bottom of the seventh inning with ground-out, pop-out and strikeout, sealing the win for UCM.
For the game, the Mules outhit the Jets, 19-2.
Zach Stewart went 1-for-3 with a double, leading Newman offensively in the contest.
Jets' starter Garrett Vandeventer (4-1) suffered the setback on the rubber after giving up six runs – five earned – on 12 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 5 1/3 innings.
