Big second half propels Mules to 89-56 win over Culver-Stockton

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Central Missouri Mules doubled up Culver-Stockton in the second half en route to an 89-56 win on Saturday afternoon at the UCM Multipurpose Building. The Mules led 35-29 at halftime before out-scoring the Wildcats 54-27 in second half.

The Mules (2-0) jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but Culver-Stockton (3-1) quickly responded with an 8-0 run to grab an 11-7 lead. The Wildcats pushed their lead to five at 20-15 with 12:29 left in the first half, but the Mules responded with an 11-0 run to grab the lead at 26-20. 

Four quick points by CSC cut the lead to two, but an 8-0 spurt by Central Missouri pushed the lead back to 10 at 34-24 with 3:09 left in the half. The Wildcats again answered with a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead in half. Neither team made a field goal over the final 2:09 and the Mules led at halftime 35-29.

UCM opened the second half on a 13-0 run to blow the game open at 48-29. The teams traded buckets over the next couple minutes before the Mules were able to extend the lead to 20 at 56-36 at the 14:13 mark.

The lead stood at 17 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game when the Mules went on an 11-0 run to put the game away. The lead ballooned to 35 as UCM out-scored the Wildcats 11-4 over the next four plus minutes and cruised to the 23-point victory.

The Mules finished the day 29-of-62 for 47 percent from the field. They were 5-of-15 from beyond the arc and 26-of-36 for 72 percent from the free throw line.

Charles Hammork and Dominique Long led the way for the Mules with 13 points apiece. Alex Dean added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Widgett Washington and Matt Webb also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Mules out-scored Culver-Stockton 36-16 in the paint, 33-7 in points off turnovers and held an 18-8 advantage in second chance points while winning the rebounding battle 44-34.

The Wildcats were led by Marshawn Norris' 14 points and 12 points from Mario Gulley.

CSC shot 22-of-62 from the floor for 35 percent, 10-of-34 from three-point range for 29 percent and 2-of-7 for 29 percent from the charity stripe.

The Mules forced Culver-Stockton in to 22 turnovers.

UCM is back in action next weekend as they travel to Maryville, Mo. for the Bearcat Classic. The Mules will play in-region foes Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday and Upper Iowa on Sunday. Both games will tip-off at 1 p.m. at Bearcat Arena in Maryville.
