TOPEKA. Kan. – Carter Young homered and hit the go-ahead double in the top of the ninth inning as the No. 3-ranked Central Missouri Mules baseball team won its 10th straight game with a 6-5 victory over the Washburn Ichabods in the series opener of a three-game MIAA series Friday, March 15, at Falley Field.
The Mules (21-3, 10-1 MIAA) and Ichabods (13-9, 8-3 MIAA) are slated to play game two of the series Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. in Topeka.
After Washburn scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, 5-5, Young smacked a two-out, RBI double to right-centerfield, allowing
Brennen van Breusegen to cross the plate, giving UCM the 6-5 advantage.
Young ended the game 2-for-4 at the plate with his fifth home run of the season – a two-run homer in the third inning and what proved to be the game-winning double, and four RBIs while
Josh Patrick belted his team-high tying seventh home run of 2024 – a solo shot in the sixth inning – to lead Central Missouri at the plate.
Reliever
JD McReynolds (2-1) earned the victory on the mound, allowing no earned runs on no hits with three strikeouts and one walk in the eighth and ninth innings.
Payton Mcharg and Cash Jay each had two hits and homered, pacing Washburn offensively.
Ichabod reliever Griffin Huiatt (1-2) took the loss on the rubber, giving up four earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
