WOLF, MULES SET NEW THREE-POINT RECORDS
• In the win over SW Oklahoma State, the Mules and
Kyle Wolf each set new school records for three-point shooting.
• Wolf made 9-of-12 three-point attempts, giving him the most made three-pointers in school history, breaking the old record of eight held by two different players.
• The Mules made 20 three-point field goals as a team, breaking the old mark of 17 which was set in two different games.
SERIES HISTORY
• This will be the 63rd all-time meeting between Central Missouri and Missouri Western. The Mules lead the series 34-28 after splitting last season's two meetings.
• The Griffons lead the series 21-11 in games played in St. Joseph after a 63-62 win last season's regular season finale at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The win snapped an eight-game winning streak by UCM in the series and a three-game winning streak in St. Joe.
• The Mules are 3-1 against the Griffons under
Doug Karleskint, while the Griffons are 1-5 against UCM under Brett Weiberg.
LAST MEETING WITH MISSOURI WESTERN
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Two made free throws by Missouri Western with just over a minute to play in the game proved to be the difference as the Mules fell 63-62 to the Griffons in the regular season finale on at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
   The Mules (14-14, 8-14 MIAA) led 62-59 with 2:24 to play in the game with a chance to extend the lead, but the Griffons (11-17, 9-13 MIAA) held on defense and held UCM scoreless the rest of the way.
   The Mules led by seven, 55-48, midway through the second half and had a chance to push the lead to 10, but Bret O'Neil's three-point attempt spun out and the Griffons grabbed the rebound. They came down and scored to spark an 8-0 run that gave them a 56-55 lead with 6:58 to play.
   The Mules went back in front on a
D'Marnier Cunningham Layup, but the Griffons tied the game making one of two free throws.
Spencer Reaves made two free throws with 3:33 to play to put UCM back in front, but the Griffons quickly tied the game.
Jakob Lowrance put the Mules back in front with a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 2:24 mark, but the Mules went scoreless the rest of the way.
   Missouri Western opened the game fast, jumping out to an 11-4 lead to force a UCM timeout. The Mules got back to within three at 16-13 on a three-pointer from Reaves at the 11:56 mark of the opening half and two free throws from
Brad Woodson pulled the Mules within one.
   Following a three-pointer from Miles Wentzien, one of his four in the game,
Tony Cochran hit a three and was fouled. He made the free throw to tie the game at 19 with 10:24 to play.
   The Mules regained the lead at 24-23 on another Cochran three-pointer, but the Griffons scored six straight points to retake the lead at 29-24 with 6:37 to play. UCM got back to within two, but a 9-0 run by the Griffons pushed the lead to 40-29 with 2:48 left in the half.
   The Mules closed the half on a 6-0 run and trailed 40-35 at the intermission. The Mules opened the second half on a 20-8 run to grab the seven point lead midway through the frame.
   Reaves led Central Missouri with 14 points as the Mules shot 42 percent from the field, 19-of-45, and 10-of-23 from three-point range for 43 percent. The Mules were 14-of-16 at the foul line.
Marquiez Lawrence finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
   Missouri Western shot 45 percent from the field, 22-of-49, and made 9-of-21 from beyond the arc for 43 percent. The Griffs were 10-of-15 from the foul line. Wentzien was the only Griffon in double figures with 16, but seven different players scored at least five points.
SCOUTING MISSOURI WESTERN
• The Griffons enter the contest at 1-6 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play following a 55-41 loss at Northeastern State on Wednesday night in the league opener for both squads. They are 0-3 at home this season.
• Missouri Western is led by fourth-year head coach Brett Weiberg. He has compiled a 35-57 mark leading the Griffon program and a 174-162 record in his 11th season overall.
• MWSU is averaging 60.3 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting. The Griffons give up 69.4 ppg on 45.7 percent shooting. The Griffs shoot 29.7 percent from beyond the arc and 69 percent at the foul line compared to the opponents' 39.3 percent shooting from three-point range and 72.1 percent at the free throw line.
• MWSU has been out-rebounded by nearly five boards per game (37.1-32.3).
• Cole Clearman leads the team and ranks ninth in the MIAA in scoring at 17.4 points per game while also pulling down 4.6 rebounds per contest.
• Seth Bonifas pours in 9.3 ppg and Joe Hamilton chips in 9.0 per contest. Beau Baker leads the team in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game.
• Missouri Western averages 11.1 turnovers per game, but the Griffons are forcing 12.0 per contest.
LAST TIME OUT • CENTRAL MISSOURI 90, SW OKLAHOMA STATE 55 • 11/26/16
WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Nov. 26, 2016) –
Kyle Wolf hit a school-record nine three-point field goals en route to a career-high 31 points and the Mules made a new school-record 20 threes as a team as UCM rolled to a 90-55 win over SW Oklahoma State on Saturday at the Multi.
   The old record for made three-pointers in a game by an individual player was eight, held by Jeremy Gorham and Cliff Murkey, and the team record of 17 was set on two separate occasions against Northwest Missouri (1/15/97) and Missouri Southern (3/6/05).
   The Mules (4-1) actually fell behind 5-0 to start the game as the Bulldogs (0-5) grabbed the early lead just over two minutes in to the game. Wolf hit his first three of the game at the 17:26 mark to put UCM on the board at 5-3 and the offense took off from there. The made shot ignited a 28-3 run that put the Mules in front 28-8 with 10:05 to play in the first half. The Mules hit seven threes during the run, including five from Wolf.
   The Bulldogs back-to-back buckets to keep the Mule lead at 18, but a three from
Clarence Smith pushed the lead back to 21 and started a 12-0 run that gave the Mules a 43-13 lead with 5:02 left in the opening stanza. SWOSU scored nine of the final 12 points of the half and the Mules led 46-22 at the intermission.
   The second half was much of the same on offense for the Mules. UCM made 10 three-pointers in the second half, just as they did in the first half. UCM was also 12-of-14 at the foul line in the second half as they outscored SWOSU 44-33 in the frame en route to the 35-point victory.
   Eleven of the 13 Mules that played in the game scored, including three in double figures. In addition to Wolf's career-high 31,
Spencer Reaves had 12 and
Dushaun Rice had a season-high 10 to go along with six assists and two steals.
Marquiez Lawrence finished with eight points and eight rebounds and
Erick Locke dished out a game-high seven assists.
   The Mules were 26-of-57 from the field for 46 percent, including the school-record 20 made threes on 36 attempts for 56 percent. UCM was 18-of-24 at the foul line. The Mules had 22 assists on their 26 made baskets and turned the ball over just six times while coming up with 11 steals and forcing 17 turnovers. They turned those 17 turnovers into a 24-6 advantage in points off turnovers.. They also out-rebounded SWOSU 37-26 and had 10 offensive boards.
   SW Oklahoma State was led by Devin Pugh's 14 points, while shooting 44 percent from the field, 20-of-46. The Bulldogs were 9-of-27 from beyond the arc for 33 percent and made 6-of-10 at the free throw line.
MULES IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
• The Mules are 4-1 in non-conference action after the win over SW Oklahoma State.
• UCM was 6-1 in non-conference games last season, including a 6-0 mark in regular season non-con games. They are 136-33 over the last 15 seasons.
