WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The No. 26 Central Missouri Mules swept a doubleheader from Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field to open a four-game MIAA series. The Mules won the opener 9-4 before taking the nightcap 4-1. The doubleheader sweep gave head coach Tom Myers his 300th career win.
Lindenwood (14-19, 11-11 MIAA) jumped on top 1-0 in game one on Marshall Vallandingham's first inning RBI single. The Mules (24-10, 21-5 MIAA) tied the game in the second on
Brad Jelinek's sacrifice fly.
The Lions went back in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but UCM responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead.
Hunter Johnson had an RBI double to get things started before Jelinek's RBI single tied the game.
Trevor Jones' RBI single put UCM in front for good and
Brad Wilson added a two-run single and
Dusty Maas scored on a throwing error.
The Mules added a single run in the fifth on Jelinek's sac bunt and another in the sixth when
Barrett Noirfalise was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Lions added a single run in the seventh, but UCM took the opener 9-4.
Jake Alexander finished with three hits in the game, while Jelinek drove in three.
Grant Gavin (1-1) earned the win after tossing 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed one run on four hits. Starter
Jake Heissler allowed three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
Austin Klein (4-2) took the loss for Lindenwood after giving up six runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.
UCM jumped on top 2-0 in the second inning of game two.
Tony Sandifer led off the inning with a home run to left center and Johnson added an RBI double in the frame. Jerry Roam had an RBI double in the third to plate a run and pull the Lions to within 2-1.
The lead stood until the sixth when
Matt Molbury scored on a Lindenwood throwing error to make it a 3-1 Mule lead. Jones led off the seventh with a double and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches to extend the UCM lead to 4-1.
Ricky Rivera (6-0) earned the win after scattering two hits and one run over seven innings. He struck out four and walked three.
Zach Davis pitched the final two innings allowing a hit to earn his seventh save of the season. He is now tied for fifth all-time at Central Missouri with 14 career saves.
Brendan Kleekamp (2-3) took the loss for Lindenwood after giving up three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings.
The series wraps up on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
