WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Central Missouri Mules baseball team split their MIAA opening doubleheader with Southwest Baptist on Friday evening at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The Mules won the opener 6-0 before falling 10-6 in the nightcap.
The Mules (4-5, 1-1 MIAA) jumped on top 1-0 in the third inning of game one on
Kevin Gratza's RBI single. UCM tacked on three more runs in the fourth to make it 4-0.
Dusty Maas had an RBI sac bunt.
Trevor Jones brought home another run with a single to left and
Jake Alexander doubled home another run.
Central Missouri tacked on two more runs in the sixth on
Tony Sandifer's first home run of the season.
Jake Heissler tossed a complete-game three-hitter. He didn't walk a batter and struck out nine in the game to move to 2-1 on the season.
Brady Greear (0-1) took the loss for SBU (1-3, 1-1 MIAA) after giving up four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead in game two with a run in the first inning. The Mules took the lead in the bottom of the first on
Barrett Noirfalise's two-run double.
SBU tied the game in the third on Chance Wolfe's sacrifice fly, then took the lead with four runs, only one of them earned, in the top of the fifth inning.
The Mules got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on
Tucker Cross' first home run of the season to pull within 6-4. UCM got another run in the sixth on Jones' RBI single and another in the seventh on
Seth Wheeler's RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
The Bearcats went back in front in the top of the eighth on Wolfe's RBI single. SBU then tacked on three more runs in the ninth to push the lead to 10-6.
The Mules loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but a groundout ended the game.
Zak Anstine (0-1) took the loss for UCM after giving up one run on two hits in 0.2 innings of relief. Starter
Kurtis Schuyler allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
Sam Vergara (1-0) earned the win for SBU after allowing one run on four hits in 3.0 innings of relief.
The series wraps up on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
