No. 19 Jennies comeback falls short in five

No. 19 Jennies (14-8, 11-3 MIAA) fall short of a win on Friday evening, after a comeback late in the match against Emporia State (10-9, 6-8 MIAA). Central Missouri dropped the first two sets but were able to force a fifth set before the Hornets took the match, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 13-15. 

Central Missouri took the first two points of the match, but Emporia quickly tied the score. After another tie score at 8-8 the Hornets went on to score five in a row, and take a 13-8 lead. Central Missouri made an effort to close the gap late in the set, but it was too little too late. Central Missouri again scored the first point of the second set, but the Hornets tied on the score on the next point, and then took the lead for the remainder of the set. Shelby Winkelmann came out in the third as the libero, freeing Annie Reilly to play the front row. The change seemed to give the Jenneis the edge they were looking for, they went on to win the next two sets. In the fifth and final set of the match the Jennies again took the first point, with Emporia State tying the score on the next point. There were six more tie scores in the fifth, but the Jennies did not take a lead, and lost the match.

Carly Sojka led the Jennies with 17 kills. She hit .317 in the match, and had 16 digs for her tenth double-double this season. She also had a perfect receiving percentage off of 22 attempts. Haley Thompson had 15 kills, and hit .324, with six blocks and an ace. Winkelmann had seven kills, and hit .429, with nine digs. Kourtney Thompson had six kills, 51 assists, and 17 digs. Reilly had five kills, and hit .105, with 16 digs. She did not commit a receiving error off of 25 attempts on the night. Mackenzie Harding had 11 kills, and hit .444, with four blocks. Lauren Dudgeon had six kills and five blocks in the match.

The Jennies will take on No. 8 Washburn at home on Saturday. The match will begin at 3 p.m. in the UCM Multipurpose Building.
