HOUSTON, Texas -- The fourth-ranked Central Missouri Mules put the leadoff runner on in seven of eight innings and pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-4 win over Arkansas Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Astros in Action D-II Invitational at Minute Maid Park. The Mules improve to 2-1 on the season and will wrap up the tournament tomorrow against Arkansas-Monticello at 1 p.m.
The Wonder Boys (0-3) struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. That lead would last until the third inning when the Mules erupted for six runs.
Brad Wilson had a two-run single to put the Mules in front and later scored on a
John Oropeza RBI single.
Jon Cotter drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run and
Samuel Domingue finished off the inning with a bases loaded single that scored two runs.
Arkansas Tech plated two runs in the top of the fifth on a Thomas Biocic double, but the Mules came back with one in the bottom half on a Cotter sacrifice squeeze bunt to push the lead back to 7-3.
The Wonder Boys plated one in the top of the sixth, but
Zach Davis pitched out of the jam and keep the lead at 7-4.
Hunter Johnson had an RBI single in the bottom half to give the Mules an 8-4 advantage.
Central Missouri added two more runs in the seventh to make it 10-4.
Dusty Maas had a run-scoring bunt single and Wilson added an RBI single later in the frame.
Devon Brogan (1-0) earned the win in relief tossing a third of an inning with one walk and one strikeout.
Zach Davis earned his first save of the season allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out three. Starter
Travis Higgs went 4.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits. He walked four and struck out four.
Jake Bell (0-1) took the loss for ATU after giving up six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. He walked five and struck out nine. Wonder Boy pitchers walked eight UCM batters in the game.
Oropeza finished the day 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Domingue had three hits and two runs batted in, while Wilson had a pair of hits and three knocked in. Cotter also drove in two runs, while Maas, Johnson and
Seth Wheeler all finished with two hits.
