HAYS, Kan. -- The ninth-ranked Mules baseball team took advantage of seven Tiger errors to complete a three-game sweep of Fort Hays State with a 10-0 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Larks Park. The Mules out-scored FHSU 43-11 and out-hit them 40-23 in the series.
The Mules (6-1, 3-0 MIAA) got on the board with two runs in the first.
Brad Wilson had an RBI sacrifice bunt to open the scoring and
John Oropeza added an RBI groundout in the inning.
UCM tacked on single runs in the second and third innings to make it 4-0.
Kevin Gratza led off the inning with a double and later scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0 Mules and in the fourth Gratza brought home Oropeza with an RBI fielder's choice.
The Mules plated two more runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 6-0.
Kyle Grieshaber led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season. Later in the inning, Gratza singled home
Jake Alexander for his second RBI of the day.
Central Missouri put up two more runs in the sixth.
Chase Graskewicz brought home Alexander with an RBI single to left field. The left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Gratza to score as well.
UCM added two more in the seventh for the 10-run lead when Oropeza singled home Grieshaber and
Trevor Jones for his second and third RBI of the day.
Travis Higgs (1-0) got the win for the Mules after tossing six scoreless innings allowing six hits. He had five strikeouts and walked just one batter.
Zach Davis pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief. He struck out one of the three batters he faced.
Robert VanCour (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers. He allowed three runs, none of them earned, on one hit in 1.2 innings. He walked three batters as the three FHSU pitchers on the day combined for nine walks.
Gratza finished the day 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Oropeza went 2-for-5 with a two-bagger, three runs driven in and a run scored. Jones had two hits and two runs scored on the day as well.
The Mules are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Lindenwood for an MIAA doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Fans can listen live on 1450 KOKO, 98.5 The Bar and www.warrensburgradio.com with Shawn Jones and
