Mules win MIAA tourney opener
Box Score KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The fifth-ranked Mules rode the right arm of Kurtis Schuyler to a 5-0 win over Fort Hays State in the MIAA Tournament on Friday at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Mules (42-7) got on the board in the third on an RBI groundout from Gabe Thibodeau (Laval, Quebec). UCM added another run in the fifth inning when Ben Cox (Warrensburg, Mo./Warrensburg HS) belted a solo home run, his second of the year, to right.

Central Missouri added three more runs in the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. Chase Graskewicz (Hudson, Wis./Hudson HS) laid down a sacrifice bunt with two runners on, but the throw sailed into right field allowing both runners to score and Graskewicz to go to third. He scored one batter later when Jon Cotter (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

The five runs were more than enough for Schuyler (Wichita, Kan./Maize HS) who tossed a complete game shutout. He scattered eight hits and didn't allow a walk, while striking out seven en route to his ninth win of the year.

Alex Ellison (3-6) took the loss for FHSU (27-23) after allowing five runs on three hits in six innings.

The Mules advance to the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m., against Missouri Western.
