Jennies Volleyball Falls to Emporia State in Five

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Central Missouri Jennies (7-10, 3-5 MIAA) fell to the Emporia State Hornets (13-5, 5-3 MIAA) by a final score of 3-2 (25-27, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 13-15) on Friday, Oct. 18, from Dr. Peggy Martin Court inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center in Warrensburg.   
 
After splitting the opening two sets of the match, Emporia State answered with a two-point victory in the third taking a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth, the Jens responded with a 10-2 run highlighted by three kills from middle blocker Rachel Ziesman (team-best 18 kills on 34 swings for a .441 hitting percentage and team-high seven blocks overall) forcing a deciding fifth set.
 
Trailing 14-8 in the fifth, Central Missouri head coach Caitlin Peterson called a timeout sparking a 5-0 Jennies run making it 14-13 ESU, but the Hornets never relinquished en route to their 13th victory of the season.  
 
Sophomores Elinor Engel (seven blocks, a career-best five digs, and .382 attack percentage overall) and Maya Fergerson (career-high four blocks overall) totaled 17 kills each, while outside hitter Tiffany Little recorded a double-double performance with 16 digs and 13 kills.
 
Defensively, the Jens were paced in the back row by libero Grace Winkelmann's 17 digs and three assists, plus, freshman Brenna Kelly collected 10 digs on the night. Wesley Chapel, Fla. native Kayla Baer also had a double-double performance with a match-high 56 assists and 14 digs adding a career-best five kills and four block assists for good measure.
 
Defensive specialist Arley Anderson collected seven digs and a match-high three service aces, plus, middle blocker / right side Grace Wagers contributed five blocks and two digs.
 
The Jens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 19, for the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match benefiting Totes of Hope, against the Washburn Ichabods (14-4, 5-3 MIAA) beginning at 2:00 p.m. from Dr. Peggy Martin Court inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center in Warrensburg.
