WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Missouri Mules baseball secured a three-game, MIAA series sweep of the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats Saturday, Feb. 25, at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field, sweeping a doubleheader, 4-0 and 6-5, after winning game one Friday, 4-1.
The Mules (9-5, 3-0 MIAA) are scheduled to host Maryville University in a midweek game Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. in Warrensburg.
In UCM's 4-0 shutout victory in game one Saturday, the Mules scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and three in the sixth inning on the way to the triumph.
Cole Moore drove in
John Prudhom with a sacrifice fly in the fourth before bringing in Prudhom again in the sixth on a fielder's choice bunt.
Brennen van Breusegen and
Isaiah Pani smacked back-to-back RBI doubles for the third and fourth runs of the contest.
Prudhom and Pani both went 2-for-4 with doubles, pacing Central Missouri at the plate in game one.
Right-handed starting pitcher
Brock Toney (2-0) earned the win on the mound for UCM, allowing no earned runs on just two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
The nightcap saw the Mules score four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying from a 5-2 deficit and earning the 6-5 victory over the Bearcats after
Max Holy's walk-off RBI single.
Jack Schark got the rally rolling with a one-out single up the middle before van Breusegen hit a pinch-hit single to centerfield, putting UCM runners on first and second base.
Quinton Hall drove in Schark with a single through the right side prior to Moore bringing in van Breusegen with an infield single to second base, cutting the Bearcat lead to 5-4.
Brett Grupe delivered the game-tying run, placing a bunt down the first base line that allowed pinch-runner
Seth Kenagy to cross home plate, making it 5-5.
Holy belted a 0-2 pitch into right field, plating Moore for the game-winning run.
Holy and Schark finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate, pacing the Mules offensively in game two.
Reliever
Ethan Peterson (2-0) picked up the win on the rubber for Central Missouri, throwing a scoreless top of the ninth and allowing two hits wit two strikeouts and no walks.
Quinn Mason tallied three hits, leading Northwest Missouri (2-12, 0-3 MIAA) at the plate in the second contest.
Bearcat reliever Casey Stalzer (0-2) was the losing pitcher after surrendering four earned runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
