Jennies Place Second, Mules 3rd at MIAA Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. (May 9, 2021) - The 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finished up Sunday afternoon. Both the Mules and Jennies had top-three finishes with the Jennies finishing in second place totaling 129 points and the Mules third with 105.5 points.

Throughout the two days, Central Missouri won six events and had 19 individuals plus one relay team earn All-MIAA accolades. Ashlan Burton in the shot put, Kayla Goodwin in the heptathlon and triple jump, Lilian Busienei in the 3,000m steeplechase and Madi Wulfekotter in the pole vault were crowned MIAA Champions for the Jennies. Garrett Francis in the decathlon and Vincent Hobbie and Reagan Ulrich in the pole vault were champions for the Mules. 

Two UCM records fell on day one. Antonio Lay in the 100m dash and Madi Wulfekotter in the pole vault. 

Following the meet, Kayla Goodwin was named the women's High Point Award winner scoring the most points by an individual at the meet. Goodwin scored 23 points with first-place finishes in the heptathlon and triple jump and a sixth place finish in the long jump. 

The women's team winners were Missouri Southern who held off the Jennies by 16 points scoring 145. Pittsburg State won on the men's side scoring 172.50. Missouri Southern was second scoring 137 followed by the Mules. 

Sprints
• Antonio Lay was the story on the track for the Mules. In his first outdoor conference meet, Lay made his presence felt running the 100m and 200m dashes. Lay had the top time in the prelims in the 100m, running 10.35. That sets a new UCM record breaking a tie held at 10.36 first done by Bruce Williams in 2008 and matched by Akeemo Minott in 2018. In the finals, Lay stumbled out of the blocks and took a third place finish running 10.63
• Lay also made the finals in the 200m dash. He ran 21.39 in the finals for a second place finish. 
• In the quarter mile, Tanner Skotnicki ran a personal-best 48.95 which was eighth in the prelims. He bettered that time in the finals running 48.85 and moved up to fifth. Isaak Rasche ran 51.65 to finish 21st.
• Destiney Nash ran below 12 seconds in the 100m for the first time in her career. She took ninth place running 11.99 which is tied for fourth all-time at UCM. In the 200m she qualified for the finals where she ran 24.97 to finish eighth. Lenetta Lee ran 12.69 in the 100m for 22nd place and 26.03 in the 200m for 23rd place. 
• The Jennies had one get through to finals in the 400m dash. Hope Thiel was sixth running a 57.22. She set a PR in the prelims running slightly faster, 57.20. Alex Foote placed ninth in 57.37.

Hurdles
• UCM had two in the top-10 in the 110m hurdles. Both Brett Shaffer and Andrew Paster ran personal-bests in the event. Shaffer ran 14.48, a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifier and placed sixth in the prelims. Shaffer then finished seventh in the finals running 14.82. Paster just missed the finals placing ninth in 14.60. 
• Shaffer ran below 54 seconds for the first time in the 400m hurdles. He placed sixth in the finals running 53.97, moving up a place from seventh after the preliminary round. Jovan Brown was 10th running 55.07.
• For the Jennies, Laia Gonzalez matched Shaffer on day one setting personal-bests in the high and intermediate hurdles and advanced to the finals. She ran the second-fastest time in the prelims at 13.92 which is third-best at UCM, but hit a hurdle in the finals and did not finish. Gonzalez then finished third in the 400m hurdles running 1:02.03 in the finals. Her time of 1:00.75 in the prelims moves her into a tie for sixth all-time at UCM. Libby Brown had an eighth place finish for UCM running 1:06.27.

Vertical Jumps
• Madi Wulfekotter already set the outdoor pole vault school record last week at the Vernon Kennedy Classic. This week, she bettered that mark and the indoor pole vault record (which she also holds) to set a new overall women's pole vault record clearing 13-11.25. Wulfekotter finished in a tie for first place in the event, but scored in second based on jumps.
• The Jens got more points out of the pole vault as Cassie Jennings took seventh jumping 12-7.5. Molly Greene was 13th at 11-7.75.
• The Mules pole vaulters had three of the top-four finishers. Vincent Hobbie and Reagan Ulrich tied for the conference title jumping 17-5.75. That mark is a personal-best for Ulrich and an outdoor PR for Hobbie who both move into a tie for third place outdoors at UCM.
• Jack Hodge got the Mules a fourth place finish jumping 16-6.
• Only the Mules had competitors in the high jump. Jesse Miller led UCM with a fourth-place finish jumping 6-8. Carter Bell and Cade Conley each cleared 6-4 with Bell taking ninth place and Conley 11th based on number of attempts. 

Horizontal Jumps
• The Mules put two in the top-three of the long jump with Chris Goodwin finishing second jumping 25-4.25 and Jesse Miller third at 24-5.75. Trey Miller also scored for UCM taking eighth place jumping 23-7.25. Austin Staib was 14th at 22-9.75.
• For the Jennies Kayla Goodwin had a sixth place finish. She had a mark of 18-11.25. Camryn Holloman just missed placing finishing ninth with a jump of 18-2.25.
• On the triple jump Sunday, the Mules had three finish in the top-10. Chris Goodwin scored a second place finish jumping 49-6.5 which is eighth all-time at UCM. Jesse Miller took fifth jumping 49-1 and Brad Jenkins was ninth at 46-8. Both Goodwin and Miller saved their best for last with the top jump coming on their final attempt. 
• Kayla Goodwin repeated as the MIAA Champion in the triple jump from the indoor season. She jumped 40-9.75 to win by a full foot over second place. Camryn Holloman also scored for UCM placing seventh jumping a season-best 37-6.75. Isabelle Crespo was 10th at 36-9 and Nicole Johnson 12th at 36-4.75. 

Throws
• Ashlan Burton repeated as the MIAA shot put champion from the indoor season. She set an outdoor personal-best throwing 52-2. It's her third career MIAA Championship. Alisha Straws finished fifth throwing 45-9. 
• Straws and Burton went back-to-back in the discus finishing third and fourth. Straws had a third-place finish throwing 159-11 while Burton was fourth in 158-4. Abby Vogel, competing in her first conference meet, placed 14th throwing 131-8 and Rachael Molloy was 18th throwing 121-4
• Rachael Molloy had a big throw on her fifth attempt at the hammer throw. She moved into second place throwing 184-1. In 10th place was Ashlan Burton throwing 159-0 and Baylie Bellin was 12th at 155-10.
• Paige VanBlarcum scored for UCM in the javelin. She finished fourth throwing 148-7. Her sister, Brandi VanBlarcum placed 10th at 132-2 and Abby Vogel threw 112-6 for 20th place.
• Addison Snowball had a tremendous two days for the Mules. On day one, he threw a personal-best 170-4 in the hammer throw to finish in 15th place. 
• On day two, Snowball came back with another personal-best in the discus. He threw 173-0 which is ninth-best all-time at UCM and placed fifth overall. And he capped it with his third personal-best throwing 55-8 in the shot put to finish sixth. 
• Justin Dannar was 13th in the discus throwing 160-9 and Ruben Varnado 20th at 144-11. 
• Michael Waldron was 16th in the javelin throwing 174-0.

Distance
• Lilian Busienei took home her first MIAA Championship. She won the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:53.41. Makenzie Stucker ran a personal-best 12:14.72 for 14th place and Karynn Carroll was 15th in 12:27.02.
• Bueienei wasn't finished and placed third in the 5K running a personal-best time of 17:35.47. She went back-to-back with Cynthia Togom who placed second running 17:28.81. Kenzie Bergman was 22nd in the race running 18:34.27.
• Mariah Elmore made a furious comeback on the final lap of the 1500m. She moved up from eighth place into fourth over the final 400m picking up five points for the Jennies. Her time of 4:41.40 was a personal-best and moved her into the UCM all-time top-10 at No. 9. Elmore also placed seventh in the 800m running 2:20.52. 
• Also setting a personal-best in the 1500m was Kimberlee Sewester who ran 4:54.71 for 15th place. 
• Nick Victor ran the 10,000m to close out day one. He finished in sixth place running in 31:34.39 for his first time running the distance on the track.
• Victor then ran the 5,000m on Sunday again leading UCM. He placed 10th crossing the line in 15:05.18. Aaron Westhoff placed 15th running 15:34.15. 
• In the men's 800m, Derek Nugent finished 21st running 1:57.62 and Adam McCauley was 30th at 2:08.11.
• Denzel Kiptoo scored for the Mules in the 1500. He ran a personal-best 3:55.60 for sixth place. Alex Kirk's 4:03.35 was also a personal-best and a 12th place finish. 
• Jared Mentz finished in 10th place in the 3,000m steeplechase running 9:45.32. 

Multis
• Kayla Goodwin's day started by finishing up the final three in the heptathlon. Leading after day one, Goodwin held on to that lead to be crowned the MIAA Champion scoring a personal-best 5157 points and moved to sixth all-time at UCM. Goodwin finished the heptathlon by winning the long jump at 18-10.5 and the javelin at 110-6. She finished in either first or second place in six of the seven events. 
• Hannah VanBuskirk held on to third place and finished with 4741 points, also a personal-best. VanBuskirk jumped 5-6 to win the high jump event on day one. She was also third in the 100m hurdles running a personal-best 14.82 and the long jump at 17-8.75.
• Libby Brown scored for the Jennies placing eighth. She totaled 4187 points. Her best events came on the track with a third place finish in the 200m (25.49) and a fourth place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.88)
• Lauren Nelson finished up in the 12th place. She scored 3715 points. Nelson was sixth in the shot put throwing 32-3.5 and seventh in the high jump clearing 5-0.25. 
• Garrett Francis gave UCM two multi-event champions. Francis set a big personal-best scoring 7221, more than 300 points better than his previous personal-best. That score also moves him into seventh all-time at UCM in the decathlon. Francis was in the lead after day one and held that throughout day two. He set personal-best marks in seven of 10 events including winning the discus at 131-5. He was in the top-4 in nine of 10 events. 
• Also setting a PR in the decathlon was Calaway McQueeny. He scored 6407 points and scored for UCM in eighth place. He won the javelin throwing 171-2 and was second in the shot put at 40-9. 
• Trent Davis finished in 10th place scoring 5939. Davis threw 179-2 in the javelin for fifth place and set personal-bests in four events. He did not finish the final event, the 1500m. 

Relays
• Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays were ran on Sunday. The Mules team of Colby Stein, Johnnie Hayes, Jake Sanders and Isaak Rasche ran 42.71 for seventh place. Camryn Holloman, Isabelle Crespo, Libby Brown and Lenetta Lee ran 48.77 for ninth place. Both 4x100m relay teams ran season-best times. 
• The meet ended with the 4x400m relay. The Jennies squad of Alex Foote, Laia Gonzalez, Hope Thiel and Destiney Nash ran 3:49.63 for third place and All-MIAA honors. 
• The Mules 4x400m team of Adam McCauley, Jake Sanders, Derek Nugent and Tanner Skotnicki finished in seventh place running 3:19.50.

Central Missouri does plan to take part in a last chance meet next week. The NCAA National Championship meet is scheduled for May 27-29 in Allendale, Mich.
