Mules Advance to Match Play at NCAA Championships

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (May 19, 2021) - Central Missouri finished in the top-eight through 54-holes at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships to qualify for the medal match play portion for the first time since 2015. 

With round totals of 313, 310, and 312, Mules Golf finished seventh out of 16 teams at the national championships. Central Missouri's three-round team total of 935 qualifies the Mules for medal match play round. The Mules moved up four places after round two to advance to medal match play. 

Matt Hoemann led the Mules through round three of the NCAA Championships shooting a 73 for one over par. Hoemann recorded a team-high five birdies on the day with nine pars, three bogeys, and one triple bogey. Hoemann shot 83 in round one, 77 in round two, and shaved off four strokes today with a 73 to lead the Mules with a 54-hole total of 233. At 17 strokes over par, Hoemann tied for 26th overall.

Ian Barnes and Sam Parrott both tied for 37th with a three-round total of  237. Barnes shot a team-high 10 pars on the day to finish with a third-round score of 80. Parrott finished the day just one stroke above Barnes with an 81. He recorded two birdies, nine pars, six bogeys and one triple bogey.

Nick Westrich birdied his first three holes to begin round three of the NCAA Championships. Those would be his only birdies of the day as he finished his final 15 holes with eight pars, five bogeys, and two double bogeys. Westrich shot 82, 78, and 78 for a 54-hole total of 238 for 22 strokes over par. He tied for 41st overall.

After leading the Mules through round two, Thomas Henson finished tied for 47th after shooting a team-high 86 in round three. Henson shot 77 in round one, 76 in round two, and 86 today for a 54-hole total of 329, 23 strokes over par. 

Through three rounds UCM recorded 138 pars, 28 birdies, and one eagle. Henson led the Mules with 32 pars while Matt Hoemann finished with 30. Barnes, Hoemann, Parrott and Westrich recorded six birdies apiece, while Hoemann was the only Mule with an eagle. 

Indianapolis finished stroke play on top with a +30, 894. They led the field by 18 strokes. The Greyhounds' Keegan Bronnenberg will take home individual champion honors with a +4, 220, winning by two strokes over four who tied for second at +6, 222. 

In medal match play, the Mules will be matched up with Arkansas Tech who finished second in stroke play as a team. All five players for each team will play all 18 holes. A team will earn a point (maximum of five points) based on the head-to-head finish of each player in the lineup (1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.). The team with the most points wins. In the event of a tie, the tying players will play a sudden death playoff hole until a winner is determined. 

The NCAA Championship is being held at the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Garden, Fla. It's a par-72 course measuring 7051 yards.
