WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 21, 2019) - Central Missouri Mules Baseball started off MIAA play against the last MIAA team they faced to end 2018. The result, wasn't quite the same as Emporia State scored five in the eighth to comeback from down to win it. The loss snaps the Mules three-game winning streak and evens their record at 5-5, 0-1 in the MIAA.
Play-by-Play
• The Mules collected 10 hits to the Hornets nine.
• UCM pitchers put more on base however with four walks while UCM had just two base on balls.
• Defensively, UCM had two errors which led to two unearned runs.
• The Hornets got on the board first in the second inning. With the bases loaded, a fielders choice allowed one run to score, and a second came across on a throwing error.
• The Mules tied it up a half inning later.
Mason Janvrin scored
Micah Evans with a ground out and
Alex Madera doubled home
Zak Whalin with two outs.
• Central Missouri scored five straight in the third and fourth.
Michael Sinks reached base on an error and
Harrison Schnurbusch made the Hornets pay by taking starter Tanner Cairnes deep to left for a two-run shot. With two outs, Whalin added another run, with an opposite-field single to score Evans.
• Emporia State tied things in the fifth with a three-run inning without a run-scoring hit. Two runs scored on wild pitches and the tying run crossed on a fielding error.
• Central Missouri again took the lead in the seventh.
Erik Webb laced a triple to left center to score Janvrin. Sinks drove in Webb with a sacrifice fly to give the Mules a 7-5 lead.
• The eighth inning is where things fell apart. The first six batters all reached base and Alex Pener, Connor Hurst and Aaron Dees went back-to-back-to-back on three straight pitches to score all five runs.
• The Mules went down in order in the final two innings and the Hornets took game one, 10-7.
Mules Stat Leaders

Harrison Schnurbusch went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Mason Janvrin collected three hits in five at bats with a triple, run and an RBI.

Zak Whalin picked up two singles in four at bats. He also scored a run and drove one in.

Erik Webb tripled, scored a run and drove one in.
•
Micah Evans scored twice with a hit and a walk.
•
Ben Kelsch started and threw the first four innings allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with four strikeouts.
For the Hornets
• Alex Pener homered and drove in three runs. He finished 2-4 with two runs.
• Aaron Dees and Connor Hurst also homered. Dees was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI while Hurst was 1-3 and scored twice.
• Tanner Cairnes started and tossed the first seven innings. He gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits.
• Drew Scrimsher earned the win pitching the final two innings. He didn't allow a baserunner and struck out three.Â
News and Notes
• Last season, Central Missouri went 4-1 against Emporia State, including two wins in the MIAA Championships.
• The Mules were the more successful team going 6-12 with runners on base and 3-7 with a runner in scoring position, while the Hornets were just 1-8 in RBI opportunities.

Ben Kelsch collected career strikeout number 100 in the opening inning, fanning the second batter he faced.

Coby Seiz struck out his 50th career batter.

Erik Webb extended their hitting streaks to 10 games. Janvrin has now hit safely in 22 straight games dating back to last season.
