Mules Struggle at Maverick Duals, Go 0-3

MANKATO, Minn. (Jan. 6, 2018)-- Mules wrestling had a tough outing to start the New Year as they went 0-3 at the Maverick Duals on Saturday afternoon. Central Missouri falls to 2-5 in dual competition this season. 

The Mules got their started taking on the host team in the No. 20 Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks. It was all Mavs as they dispatched UCM 45-3. The lone win for the Mules came from Jesse Reser at 165 pounds. The sophomore, in his first competition of the season, was down 4-2 early, but mounted a comeback and scored a 7-6 decision with riding time over Seth Elwood.

UCM fared a bit better in the second dual of the day, but fell short of securing a win. Against in-region foe Southwest Minnesota State, the Mules led 8-3 early and trailed by just one, 12-11, at the midway point, but Mustangs held on for the 24-14 win. John Feeney scored a 5-1 decision at 133 pounds to tie the dual 3-3 after two matches. Carson Meek gave UCM its only lead of the day at 8-3 with an 18-3 technical fall over Mick Santos. The Mules dropped a decision and a pin before securing another win. Reser improved to 2-0 with another 7-6 decision. The Mules got within one with Reser's win, 12-11, but only scored one more win. Braden Best scored a 6-1 decision, but it was too little too late as the Mustangs held on for the 10-point dual victory.

The Mules final dual of the day came against the No. 2 ranked Wisconsin- Parkside Rangers. It was 6-0 Mules to start after Tyler Flood picked up a win via forfeit. From then on, the Rangers won eight of the nine remaining weight classes to secure the 36-10 win. UCM's only other win came from Reser as he scored a 13-5 major decision over Brett Scoles. He had a solid day for the Mules going 3-0 and was the only Mule to pick up multiple wins. 

UCM will back in action this coming week on Jan. 10 and 11 with a pair of MIAA duals. The Mules will take on the Newman Jets on Tuesday the 10th. Following that, they will be at Central Oklahoma on the 11th to face the Bronchos. Both duals are set for 7 p.m. starts.
