ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Jennies softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Missouri Western Regional Crossover, defeating St. Cloud State, 7-2 before coming up short against Missouri Southern, 2-0.
In game one, Central Missouri (13-11) scored seven runs in the first five innings, building a 7-0 lead over St. Cloud State.
Amanda Nally got the Jennies going in the top of the second with a leadoff homerun to give UCM a 1-0 lead.
Lauren Mabe gave UCM a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a single that scored
Lindsey Dawson.
In the top of the third,
Jessica Neely led off the inning with a homer to left centerfield, pushing the Jennies' lead to 3-0.
UCM broke the game open in the top of the fifth, sending 10 hitters to the plate and producing four runs, two coming off the bat of
Madison Hood, who came in to pinch-hit for
Emily King that gave the Jennies their fifth and sixth runs.
St. Cloud State got two of those runs back in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single by Kelsie Fitch and a fielder's choice from Megan Larkin that plated Alyssa Coletto.
Jennies starter
Jakki Prater (9-5) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs (none earned) on seven hits. She did not issue any walks and recorded seven strikeouts.
In game two, Missouri Southern's Shelby Romines drove in both runs for the Lions, the first coming in the bottom of the fourth and the second coming in the bottom of the sixth.
The Jennies had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the sixth, putting runners at second and third with no outs. The next three batters were unable to bring the runners across home plate, allowing MSSU to escape with the 2-0 win.
Jennies pitcher
Jessica Wilkes threw six innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits. She walked one and struck out four.
Ali Jo Rogers and
Lindsey Dawson accounted for four of the team's four hits in the second game, both collecting two hits.
UCM will conclude its Missouri Western Regional Crossover slate tomorrow against Northern State at 2 p.m. and Concordia St. Paul for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
