(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) - The Central Missouri Jennies began their season with back to back 3-0 wins over Western New Mexico and Minnesota-Crookston at the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic on Friday.
Central Missouri opened up the regular season with a 3-0 victory over Western New Mexico, 25-22 25-15 25-21. The first set of the match was a close battle between the Jennies and Western New Mexico, neither team taking a significant lead before the other responded. Western New Mexico evened the score at 7-7, when Central Missuori pulled ahead with six straight points. In the final points of the set Western New Mexico again pulled within two points of Central Missouri, but
Taylor Goodness sealed their fate with a final kill, her ninth of the set.
In the second set, Central Missouri took a quick lead, winning five straight points to start, three of which were kills by Goodness. Western New Mexico won a point, before Central Missouri again took over, scoring three more points to make the score 8-1. From that point Western New Mexico started to catch up to the Jennies, coming within three points of tieing the set at 14-11. Central won seven straight points to make the score 20-11, before giving Western New Mexico the opportunity to catch up. Neither team had a siginifcant point streak, but with a nine point lead the Jennies didn't need it. The final two points of the set when to Central Missouri, ending the second set with a final score of 25-15.
The final set of the match started with Western New Mexico taking a 3-0 lead over the Jennies. Central Missouri finially caught up at 7-7, but the battle was still back and forth after that. Little by little Central Missouri inched ahead of Western New Mexico, earning four points to give them the lead at 12-10, and the Jennies never looked back. Western New Mexico came close to catching up with Central Missouri at 24-21, before
Carly Sojka registered a kill to end the match.
Central Missouri continued the momentum into their second match, where they again defeated their opponent, Minnesota-Crookston, 3-0. The first set was close, with Minnesota-Crookston leading 6-7 until
Becca Blaise earned Central a point with a kill. The Jennies went on to win the next seven points straight. Minnesota-Crookston was able to collect a few points throught the rest of the set, but the final five point drive by Central Missouri set them over the top to win the first set 25-13.
The second set was no different than the first match, the final score was even the same, 25-13. Minnesota-Crookston and Central Missouri were tied 6-6, when
Maddie Jones earned the Jennies the first of five straight points, to put the Jennies up 11-6. Minnesota-Crookston made a small comeback, earning four of the five points, before the Jennies added another six straight points, making the score 18-10. Minnesota-Crookston was able to add only three more points to their score. Centra; Missouri finished off the set winning the final two two points on back-to-back kills by Blaise.
Central Missouri took an early lead in the third set at 10-5, with Sojka, Blaise, and Gooddness contributing two kills a peice. Minnesota-Crookston was successful in stopping the Jennies a few times, but Central Missouri was quick to earn the next point, until the score reached 22-11. It looked like Minnesota-Crookston was making a come back, earning eight of the next ten points of the game, but the match ended when Gooddness and
Haley Thompson blocked a kill attempt.
The Jennies will continue to compete in the Hilltopper-Rattler Classic Saturday. Their first match will be against Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m., and Adams State later that evening at 5 p.m.
