WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The No. 5 Central Missouri Jennies won the final match of the MIAA Tournament Saturday evening over No. 11 Nebraska-Kearney in five sets, 25-27, 29-27, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12, in the UCM Multipurpose Building. The Jennies had 71 kills, 12 blocks, and six serving aces in the match.
There were 16 tie scores and eight lead changes in the first set of the match. The Jens had a 21-20 lead, but the Lopers tied the match at 21-21. The teams split the following eight points before Nebraska-Kearney scored two consecutive points to finish off the set at 27-25. Carly Sojka had seven kills and hit .538 in the set.
The Lopers lead the Jennies for a majority of the second set. There were five tie scores in the first 20 points of the match, but Nebraska-Kearney then had the lead until the Jennies finally caught up at 22-22. The teams again took turns scoring the following 10 points, until two kills in a row by
Julia Bates and
Taylor Goodness finished the set. Goodness had seven kills in the set, Sojka had eight.
The Jennies started set three with a 3-1 lead, two kills from Goodness and an ace from Sojka. The Lopers tied the Jennies at 4-4, but that was the only tie score the Jennies allowed in the set. The Jennies scored two points in a row at the end of the set with a kill by
Haley Thompson and another by Sojka to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Sojka had five kills, Goodness and Thompson both had three.
In the start of set four the Lopers took the lead after the first six points in the match, and held the lead for a remainder of the set. Central Missouri scored three points in a row to come with in a point of the Lopers at 16-17, but Nebraska-Kearney scored the next eight of 11 points to finish the match at 25-19. Sojka and Goodness both had three kills in the match.
Central Missouri won the first 10 of 12 points in the fifth set to take a 10-2 lead. The Lopers then won the following 10 or 13 points to cut the Jennies eight point lead to three. The Jennies and Lopers both scored a point each before Goodness finished the match with a kill. Sojka and Goodness both had three kills in the match.
Sojka had a career-high 26 kills, and her sixth double-double this season with 20 digs. Sojka hit .375 in the match and also had a block. Bates had her fifth double-double this season with 55 assists, and 17 digs. She also had a serving ace and six kills. Goodness had 19 kills and three blocks. Thompson had nine kills and five blocks.
Maddie Jones had five kills and four blocks.
Becca Blaise had six kills and five blocks.
Annie Reilly had 28 digs and four serving aces.
The Jennies will play in the NCAA Central Regional Tournament Dec. 5-8. The location of the tournament will be announced Monday.
