WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Central Missouri Jennies claimed their third consecutive straight-set victory, and fourth in a row overall, defeating the Lindenwood Lions 25-17, 26-24, 25-19, Saturday afternoon at the Multipurpose Building. Senior hitter
Bradye Peniston led the team with 13 kills and a .478 hitting percentage.
The Jennies (8-3, 2-0 MIAA) came out strong in front of their home crowd, taking the first three points thanks to a bad set from Lindenwood, and a pair of kills from Peniston and
Lisa Moore. Lindenwood responded however, taking a 6-2 run to get back into the set. UCM was able to outpace the Lions through the rest of the set, siding out on Lindenwood's last 12 serves.
In the second set, Lindenwood controlled the tempo early, leading 8-6 before scoring the next six points, stretching their lead to 14-6. After trading serves at 15-7, the Jennies reeled off eight straight points, highlighted by three kills from Peniston as well as a pair of kills from
Taylor Goodness. The run tied the set at 15-15, and after Lindenwood rallied for three straight kills to make it 18-15, the Jens went on a 6-1 run to reclaim the lead, 21-19. UCM held set point at 24-23, but a Lions score briefly tied the set. A service error by Lindenwood gave the Jens the edge again, and on their second set point at 25-24, Peniston and junior
Julia Bates teamed up for the set-clinching block.
Both sides struggled to gain an advantage in the third set, as neither team held more than a three-point lead until late. The Lions had a 13-11 lead before four kills and a Lindenwood error made it 16-13 Jennies. The Jens held the lead throughout the rest of the set, going 5-of-6 on sideout points the rest of the way. Peniston recorded her 13th kill of the afternoon to finish off the match and claim the victory.
As a team, the Jennies hit for a .323 average, the highest total so far this season. Setter
Julia Bates recorded 29 assists, as well as six kills on just 10 attempts. Freshman libero
Annie Reilly picked up nine digs in the win. Peniston, along with
Hillary McCormick led the way with five total blocks apiece, with each player picking up a solo block in the match as well.
The Jennies will look to keep their perfect conference record alive through the second week of the MIAA slate, as they travel to face Missouri Western on Friday, September 21. The Jens will then return home on Saturday, September 22 to take on Truman at 7 p.m.
