Box Score PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The
fifth-ranked Mules closed out the regular season portion of their schedule Sunday afternoon with a
6-4 win over
Pittsburg State at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kansas. The Mules out-scored PSU 42-10 in the four-game sweep and have now won 10 straight games.
The Gorillas (20-28, 16-22 MIAA) got on the board in the first on an RBI single by Brad Foss. The Mules (41-7, 34-4 MIAA) came right back to grab the lead with a three-run second inning. Gabe Thibodeau had an RBI single to tie the game. Ben Cox scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Bret Schwartz added an RBI groundout.
Central Missouri plated two more runs in the third to open a 5-1 advantage. Cox had a sacrifice bunt to score the first run of the inning and Chase Graskewicz added an RBI single.
The lead was still 5-1 in the seventh when Pittsburg State got to within a run on a three-run homer by Evan Thomas.
The Mules added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Thibodeau scored on a PSU throwing error.
Chris Fitzpatrick (6-0) earned the win on the mound for UCM. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. He walked one and struck out four. Travis Unthank allowed a pair of singles in two innings of relief to earn his eighth save of the year.
George Brandecker (4-4) took the loss for Pittsburg State giving up five runs on 13 hits in seven innings of work.
UCM recorded 15 hits in the game giving the Mules 60 hits over the four game series. Thibodeau, Schwartz, Selanders and Cotter all recorded two hits in the game.
The Mules are back in action on Friday morning at 11 a.m. as they open MIAA tournament play at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. UCM is the No. 1 seed in the tournament as the MIAA regular season champions and will get a first round bye. The Mules will play the lowest remaining seed from Thursday's two opening round games.
