Mules complete series sweep of Lincoln

The fifth-ranked Mules completed a four-game MIAA series sweep of Lincoln on Saturday with 4-3 and 11-0 wins on Saturday afternoon at the LU Baseball Field in Jefferson City, Missouri. The Mules extended their winning streak to 10 straight games with the series sweep.

The Mules (27-5, 22-4 MIAA) jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Gabe Thibodeau led off the game with a single, one of only two hits for the Mules, and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by John Oropeza. Jordan Coons also scored on the play when the throw to first got away from the first baseman. Oropeza would score later in the inning on a passed ball.

The Blue Tigers (3-26, 3-18 MIAA) got on run back in the bottom of the inning on a Chris Pfau RBI single. Lincoln plated two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Cody Huff had an RBI single as did Caleb Kemna.

The Mules scored one in the sixth to regain the lead. Coons was hit by a pitch to lead off and scored on a triple from Albert Selanders proving to be the winning run.

Dane Krone (4-0) earned the win in relief allowing four hits in 2.1 innings. Adam Maddox tossed a perfect inning in relief and Travis Unthank got the final two outs of the game for his fifth save of the season. Pfau (2-6) took the loss for LU after giving up four runs on just two hits in seven innings.

The Mules jumped on top early in game two as well with four first inning runs. Oropeza had a two-run single. Coons scored on a throwing error and Kevin Gratza added an RBI single.

UCM added three more in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Bret Schwartz had a run-scoring groundout to plate the first run. Coons added an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch. A Chase Graskewicz sacrifice fly in the third made it 8-0.

The Mules plated a single run in the fifth on a Jon Cotter RBI single to push the lead to 9-0. Will Mulligan had a bases-loaded single to plate two runs in the seventh and give the Mules the 11-0 lead and the ten-run rule win.

Chris Fitzpatrick (5-0) was spectacular on the mound for UCM tossing a complete game two-hitter. He faced just one batter over the minimum and struck out six to earn his fifth win of the year.

Blake Jones (1-6) took the loss for Lincoln after surrendering eight runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.    

Schwartz finished the game 2-for-3 and moved into a tie for second on UCM's career hits list with 275.

The Mules are back in action Tuesday when they return home to host Southwest Baptist in an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday is “Dollar Day” at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. Admission will cost just $1 and Sodexo will have $1 hot dogs and popcorn at the concession stand.
