Jennies split two with Truman State Bulldogs Friday in Kirksville

(KIRKSVILLE, Mo.) – Jennies softball (17-24, 2-10 MIAA) split an MIAA doubleheader against the Truman State Bulldogs Friday afternoon in Kirksville, dropping the first game 5-4, and then winning game two, 4-1.
            In the first game of the day, the Jennies saw a four-run lead evaporate in the final two innings, dropping the contest 5-4.
            The Jennies scored all their runs in the top of the third inning beginning with a Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.) bunt, scoring Brittany Martin (Warrensburg, Mo.), giving the Jennies the early 1-0 lead. Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) added another two runs in the inning when she belted a single to left field, driving in Bivens and Karissa Williams (Wichita, Kan.), putting Central Missouri up 3-0. Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.) gave the Jens the 4-0 lead after placing a sacrifice bunt into play which scored Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.).
            The Bulldogs began to chip into the Jennies' lead in the bottom of the sixth when Liz Leath hit a homerun to left field, driving in three runs, and pulling the Bulldogs within one of the Jennie lead, 4-3.
            Truman scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by Central Missouri. Mary Manley then singled to left field for the Bulldogs, scoring Kelsey Bollman, giving Truman the come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Jennies.
            The Jennies defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.
            Central Missouri scored first in the top of the second inning when Norberg scored on a passed ball, giving the Jennies the early 1-0 lead. The Jennies scored their second run of the inning on a wild pitch, allowing Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.) to cross home plate and increase the Central Missouri lead to 2-0.
            The Jennies made it 3-0 in the top of the third when Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) doubled to right field, scoring Young.
            Truman got their only run of the game in the bottom of the third on a Central Missouri wild pitch.
            The Jennies got another run in the top of the fourth when Martin doubled down the left field line, driving in Bengtson, making the score 4-1, Jennies.
            Jennies pitcher Sarah Espy (Olathe, Kan.) pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out two, improving her overall record to 6-7 this season.
            The Jennies return to action Saturday afternoon with an MIAA doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State in Maryville beginning at 1 p.m.
