Mules rally to complete series sweep of Ichabods
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The sixth-ranked Mules completed a four-game MIAA sweep over the Washburn Ichabods with a pair of victories Sunday at Crane Stadium-Tompkin Field on the UCM campus in Warrensburg, Missouri.

The Mules (35-7, 28-4 MIAA) won the opener, 5-1, before a thrilling come-from-behind victory in game two, 6-5. The Mules trailed Washburn by a run with two outs in the ninth inning before rallying for the win in the nightcap.

Senior Kyle Jackson pitched a gem in the opener, going 6 2/3 innings while allowing only one run on four hits. The Mules took an early 1-0 lead in the first, after Bret Schwartz singled, then eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Jordan Coons groundout. The Mules added two more in the fourth, as Coons scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, before an RBI single fromChase Graskewicz to bring home Albert Selanders. UCM added single runs in the fifth and sixth en route to the victory.

After giving up a 1-0 lead to the Ichabods in the first inning of game two, the Mules responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.Kevin Gratza successfully put down the squeeze bunt to score Schwartz, before Coons scored again on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

In the second inning, Trevor Jones blooped a single to plate Brad Wilson, who had tripled with one out, giving UCM a 3-1 advantage. The Ichabods got a run back in the top of the third to cut the lead to one, before the Mules got back to back doubles from Will Mulligan and Gratza for a run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Mules 4-2 advantage didn't last long, as Washburn responded with three runs in the seventh to grab the lead, and held the advantage heading to the bottom of the ninth inning.

Ben Cox led off the ninth with an infield single to short, and then stole second to get the tying run in scoring position. The Warrensburg native then advanced on a fly ball to right from Graskewicz. After a walk, Cox was thrown out at home on an attempted squeeze play. With runners on first and second, and two outs, Gabe Thibodeau reached on a costly error by the Washburn second baseman, allowing pinch-runner Adam Schultz to score and tie the game at five. Schwartz then ended the game with a walk-off single through the right side to take the sweep.

Cox had the most productive day at the plate for the Mules, going a combined 3-for-6 with a walk and stolen base.  Adam Maddox came in as a reliever in both games, throwing a combined two innings to earn the save in game one and the win in game two.

The Mules closed out their regular season home schedule with the victory, finishing the 2012 regular season with a 16-3 record at Crane Stadium.

Next week, UCM travels to Emporia State for a four-game set, with a chance to clinch the MIAA regular season title. Game one is set for Friday, April 27, at 6 p.m.
