No. 10 Mules Baseball sweeps Missouri Southern 5-1 and 3-2
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The 10th-ranked Central Missouri Mules swept an MIAA doubleheader from Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The Mules won the opener 5-1 before rallying for a 3-2 walk-off win in the nightcap.
      The Mules (22-5, 17-4 MIAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Jordan Coons had an infield RBI single to get UCM on the board and John Oropeza added an RBI groundout. Central Missouri added a single run in the fourth on a Chase Graskewicz RBI single to make it 3-0.
      The Mules made it 5-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Kevin Gratza's squeeze bunt scored Bret Schwartz from third and Coons came all the way around from second to score on the play as well.
      The Lions (19-10, 12-9 MIAA) plated a single run in the sixth on a Sam Ryan RBI single, but that was all they could get.
      Lee Stoppelman (3-0) earned the win for UCM after tossing six solid innings. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out six.
      Ryan Wheat (4-2) took the loss for MSSU after giving up five runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
      Missouri Southern took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two when Sam Ryan led off with a home run to left field. The Lions threatened for more in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but Kyle Jackson recorded a strike out and Schwartz made a great defensive play on a ball up the middle to hold MSSU without a run in the inning.
      The Mules got things started in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles by Oropeza and Albert Selanders with Oropeza going first to third on the second hit. Gratza's sacrifice fly scored Oropeza to tie the game before Selanders came home on a bunt by Ben Cox to give UCM a 2-1 lead. The Lions tied the game in the top of the seventh when Luke Acosta scored on a wild pitch.
      Coons led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to deep left center and Oropeza singled to center on the first pitch he saw to give the Mules the walk-off win and the doubleheader sweep.
      Jackson (3-1) earned the win after tossing 1.2 innings of relief. He gave up one run on one hit. Starter Chris Fitzpatrick tossed 5.1 innings giving up just one run on five hits.
      Grant Conrad (1-1) took the loss for MSSU after giving up one run on three hits in one inning of relief work. Starter David Reese allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings.
      The series wraps up on Sunday with a single nine-inning game at 12 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
