(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – Jennies' softball (16-21) had to settle with a split against the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons Friday afternoon in St. Louis, taking a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in game one then dropping the second game of the doubleheader, 7-4.
Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.) stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied 4-4 and blasted a triple to right field, driving in
Karissa Williams (Wichita, Kan.), and giving the Jennies the eventual 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Tritons in the first game of the day.
The Jennies took an early 2-0 lead after runs in the top of the first and second innings.
Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) started off the game for the Jennies with a single through the middle of the field, driving in
Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.), giving the Jens the 1-0 lead in the first.
Jordan Marble (Jefferson City, Mo.) gave the Jennies the 2-0 lead in the top of the second when she belted her second homerun of the season to right center field.
The 2-0 lead wasn't safe though. The Tritons plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth, taking the 4-2 lead.
The Tritons looked like they would pull out the win until the top of the final inning. The excitement started with a lead-off single to third base by
Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.) then a bunt-single by
Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.), giving Central Missouri two runner's on-base with nobody out. Marble then stepped to the plate and hit a ground-ball and was out at first base, but the ball allowed both Norberg and Bengtson to advance a base. The Jennies were down to their final out after
Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) popped out to second.
Karissa Williams stepped up to bat and Missouri-St. Louis proceeded to commit a throwing error on William's at-bat, allowing both Norberg and Bengtson to score and knot the game up, 4-4. After reaching first on the throwing error, Williams stole second, putting her in scoring position with Bivens up to bat. Bivens delivered the game-winning triple, only her second triple of her collegiate career.
Jennies' freshman right-hander
Katie Shockley (Crocker, Mo.) pitched two innings in relief, striking out one and only allowing one hit, picking up her third win of the season and improving her season record to 3-2.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Missouri-St. Louis pounded out 10 hits and took a 7-4 victory over the Jennies.
The Jennies plated a run in the top of the third on a double through the left side of the field by
Braylyn Bivens then two more in the top of the sixth thanks to a two-run homerun to left centerfield by
Ashlea Bengtson, her first homerun this season. Central Missouri added a single run in the top of the seventh on a ground ball from
Jaydee Young, which allowed Bivens to cross the plate, making the final score 7-4, Tritons.
The Tritons scored six runs in the bottom of the first, then two in the second and one in the fourth to seal the victory.
With the loss, the Jennies drop to 16-21 overall. Central Missouri is back in action Saturday afternoon at home, hosting an MIAA doubleheader with Southwest Baptist at the South Recreation Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
