The 10th-ranked Mules baseball team swept an MIAA doubleheader from Southwest Baptist at Dodson Field in Bolivar, Mo., on Tuesday. The Mules took game one 5-1 before run-ruling the Bearcats 12-2 in eight innings in game two.
The Mules (19-5, 14-4 MIAA) plated four runs in the second inning to grab control of game one. Ben Cox had a bases loaded single that plated two runs. Chase Graskewicz added an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 and a Gabe Thibodeau RBI bunt made it 4-0 in favor of the Mules. Jordan Coons led off the third with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Brad Wilsonsacrifice fly to center to make it 5-0.
The Bearcats (11-12-1, 6-8 MIAA) plated a single run in the fifth on a Landon Young sacrifice fly to make it 5-1, but that is all they would get.
Marshall Dean (1-1) picked up his first win of the season with a complete-game performance. He allowed just one run while scattering four hits over seven innings.
Cody Holzer (1-1) took the loss for SBU after giving up five runs on six hits with six walks in seven innings.
The Mules took an early lead in game two with a pair of first inning runs. Coons had an RBI sacrifice bunt and Albert Selanders added an RBI single to put UCM in front. Southwest Baptist crawled back into it and tied the game with single runs in the fourth and the fifth innings.
The game was still tied in the seventh when Central Missouri put a four-spot on the board to retake the lead for good. Jon Cotter had an RBI double to put the Mules in front and Bret Schwartz had a two-run triple to extend the lead to 5-2 and he later scored on a Selanders bunt.
UCM poured it on with six runs in the eighth inning to make it 12-2. Cox started things with an RBI single to plate John Oropeza. Thibodeau had an RBI bunt, while Coons and Selanders added RBI singles. Graskewicz finished off the scoring with an RBI double to right center to give UCM a 10-run lead.
Dane Krone (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Mules surrendering just two hits in 2.1 innings. Starter Jason Bell gave up two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
Tyler Burnett (0-1) took the loss for the Bearcats after giving up three runs on four hits in six innings.
Thibodeau finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the game, while Selanders drove in three runs. Schwartz and Coons each drove in a pair.
The Mules are back in action this weekend when they host Missouri Southern in a four-game series. Things get underway on Friday with a single nine-inning game at 6 p.m.
