Jennies split two games with Washburn Lady Blues

(TOPEKA, Kan.) – Jennies' softball (12-14, 1-7 MIAA)  split two games to the Washburn Lady Blues Saturday afternoon in Topeka, taking an 8-0 win in game one, then falling in game two, 10-0.
            The Jennies picked up their first MIAA conference win of the season in the first game of the day over the Lady Blues, using a 10-3 hitting advantage, rolling to an 8-0 victory.
            The Jens gained their first lead of the game in the top of the second inning, plating three runs, taking the early 3-0 lead over Washburn. The scoring started when Jordan Marble (Jefferson City, Mo.) reached base on a fielder's choice to shortstop, allowing Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) to cross the plate and put the Jennies up, 1-0. Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.) then singled to centerfield, driving in Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) and increasing the Jennies' lead to 2-0. Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.) then fouled out to leftfield but Brittany Martin (Warrensburg, Mo.) was able to beat the throw to home plate, increasing the Central Missouri lead to 3-0.
            The Jennies added two more runs in the top of the fifth beginning on an Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) single through the right side, driving in Bivens and Bengtson and making the score 5-0 in favor of Central Missouri.
            The Jennies weren't done though. They added another run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly-ball by Marble, allowing Young to cross home plate and give the Jennies a 6-0 lead.
            Central Missouri plated two more in the top of the seventh on a single to shortstop by Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.), driving in Groeger and Bivens and making the Jens lead over the Lady Blues 8-0.
            Jennies' right-hander Sarah Espy (Olathe, Kan.) pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out two, improving to 4-3 overall.  
            In the second game of the day, the Jennies fell to Washburn 10-0.
            The Jennies will look to bounce back Monday when they travel to Pensacola, Florida to battle West Florida in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Central time (4 p.m. EST).
