Jennies’ softball sweeps day two of Best Western Premier Spring Fling

(DENTON, Texas) – University of Central Missouri Jennies' softball (7-2) swept the second day of action at the Best Western Premier Spring Fling in Denton, Texas Saturday, defeating Midwestern State in the opener 6-5 then taking a 3-2 hard fought 11-inning win over Tarleton State in the nightcap.
 
Game 1: Central Missouri 6, Midwestern State 5
            The Jennies (6-2) started off day two with a 6-5 win over Midwestern State, marking the second straight year the Jennies have defeated the Mustangs in Texas.
            Central Missouri got the offense going in the third inning when Medora West (St. Louis, Mo.) singled up the middle of the field to score Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.), who led off the inning with a double to right centerfield, putting the Jennies on-top 1-0.
            The Mustangs answered right back in the bottom half of the third with a run of their own after Mallory Mooney singled up the middle of the field to drive in Midwestern State's first run and tie the game up at 1-1.
            Midwestern State then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-1.
            The Jennies answered though in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs to take the 6-4 lead. It started when West placed another single, this time to left field, scoring Brittany Martin (Warrensburg, Mo.). The Jennies got another one of their five runs when Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) was walked by Midwestern State, scoring Jordan Marble (Jefferson City, Mo.). Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) added another right after that when she singled to right field, driving in Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.). Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.) put the finishing touch on the Jennies' seventh inning when she belted a double into right field to score Groves and West.
            The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score 6-5 in favor of the Jennies.
            Megan Schallom (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up her second win of the season, pitching all seven innings and striking out seven Mustangs. The victory improves her to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
Central Missouri 3, Tarleton State 2 (11-innings)
            It took a while, 11-innings to be exact, but the University of Central Missouri Jennies' were able to defeat the Tarleton State Texanns, sweeping the second day of the Best Western Premier Spring Fling in Denton, Texas, by a score of 3-2.
            The Texanns struck first in the top of the fourth, scoring on a sacrifice fly-ball to take the 1-0 early lead.
            The Jennies came right back in the bottom of the sixth though when Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) was able to cross the plate on a Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.) pop fly, evening the game up at one apiece.
            The score remained knotted up at one at the end of the seventh inning, forcing extra innings.
            In the top of the tenth, Tarleton State took the lead off a ground-rule double to centerfield, giving the Texanns the 2-1 lead.
            Central Missouri answered right back though in the bottom of the tenth when Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) doubled down the left field line scoring Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) and knotting the game up at 2-2.
            The Jennies scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning on a single through the left side of the field by Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) allowing Medora West (St. Louis, Mo.) to score and give Central Missouri the 3-2 win.
            Jennies' freshman Katie Shockley (Crocker, Mo.) pitched seven innings with six strikeouts to pick up her second win of the season and improve to 2-0 overall.
            The 11-inning contest was the longest game for Jennies' softball since May 8, 2008 when the Jennies fell to Northwest Missouri State, 1-0, in 11-innings.
            Central Missouri will wrap-up the Best Western Premier Spring Fling Sunday with a single game against eighth ranked Angelo State at 11:15 a.m. in Denton.
