(ROLLA, Mo.) – After a rough start in the opening set, the No. 8 Central Missouri Jennies turned the momentum around and defeated the Missouri S&T Miners in four sets, 21-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21. Senior hitter
Paula Harris led the Jennies with a season-high 23 kills. Harris, who was just three kills behind her career high of 26 that she set back in her freshman season, hit for a .462 average. The Conway Springs, Kan. native collected five blocks, giving her a total of 23.5 points for the match. Not to be outdone, senior
Allie Huffman collected 17 kills on the night, just two shy of her career best. Sophomore
Julia Bates finished with a season-high 48 assists, while
Taylor Krejci and
Kelsey Ortwerth anchored the back line with 19 and 16 digs, respectively.
Struggling through the opening match, Central Missouri fell behind as much as nine points to the Miners. Down 13-4 at one point in the set, The Jens closed to within four points late, denying six set points from Missouri S&T before finally succumbing to the Miners. The Jennies took control of the second and third sets, however, leading nearly the entire way through both games. The Miners kept things close in the fourth game, holding a lead as late as 14-13; one of three service aces from
Taylor Krejci tied the match at 14, and the Jennies never looked back.
The Jennies improve to 3-2 on the year, as they now prepare for their home opener on Friday, September 9th, where they will take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas. The match will be part of the 2011 Peggy Martin Challenge, and is scheduled for 7 p.m.
