Jennies Honor Seniors, Fall to Washburn

(Warrensburg, Mo.) – Seniors Kelli Kurka, Jamin Landreth and Kasey Martin were recognized for all of their work and time put in to the Central Missouri softball program, but the three of them could not go out in style. The Jennies fell 6-4 to the Washburn Lady Blues on Saturday afternoon at home.
Kurka cracked her fourth home run of the season, her lone hit of the day. Landreth started the game in the circle for UCM, throwing 2.2 innings. Martin was on base once.
The Jennies had a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh inning when Washburn scored three times for the victory. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Zordel hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game. Two batters later hit a double down the left field line that plated two more runs.
Central Missouri scored two runs in the fourth frame off the bat of junior Katie Groves. With runners on second and third and one out, Groves drove a pitch to right center for a double that scored both runners.
In the fourth with two outs, Kurka smoked a pitch over the right center field fence for a homerun and at the time tie the game at three apiece. Then with a runner on second, freshman Brittany Rozier singled to right field to give UCM its first lead of the day.
Washburn tallied its first three runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly and back-to-back two-out doubles.
Landreth gave up three runs in the game, all earned. She scattered five hits and struck out one batter. Sophomore Sarah Espy suffered the loss, throwing 4.1 innings. She gave up the three innings on four hits, walking two and striking out four.
The Jennies and Lady Blues have tentatively rescheduled game two for Tuesday, April 26 at Jennies Field with game time TBD.
