(Springfield, Mo.) – Even with out-hitting and out-scoring its opponents the Central Missouri Jennies softball team splits on the second day of the MIAA Crossover in Springfield, Mo. UCM fell 3-1 in the first game against No. 22 Missouri Western and defeated Fort Hays State 7-2 in the second contest.
Junior
Jaydee Young led the Jens, going 5-of-6 on the day. She collected her first triple and home run in the Cardinal and Black. Young also scored twice, and hit two in. Junior
Katie Groves tallied two hits, one a triple. She also scored once, had one RBI, and a stolen base.
The Jennies will wrap up the MIAA Crossover on Sunday with a pair of games in Springfield, Mo. They will first face Truman State at 10 a.m. and then go head-to-head against Northwest Missouri at noon.
Game 1: Jennies 1, No 22 Missouri Western 3
Central Missouri tallied the only hit thru the first three innings but could not capitalize on it. The Griffons finally got their first hit in the fourth, which ultimately allowed them to get on the board. The Jennies tied it up in the top of the seventh only to give up a two-run blast in the bottom half.
The Jennies did out hit MWSU 5-3 in the game but couldn't get any of them together until the seventh inning when the tied the game. With two outs sophomore
Ashlea Bengtson singled down the left field line and scored on a single by Young and error on the Griffons outfielder.
Missouri Western had two outs in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on first and hit a walk-off home run down the left field line.
Young went 3-of-3 in the game with a triple and two singles. Senior
Kasey Martin and Bengtson collected the other hits.
Sophomore
Megan Schallom suffered her second loss of the season, pitching the whole game. She walked five batters and struck out three.
Game 2: Jennies 7, Fort Hays State 2
Central Missouri crossed the plate three times in the third frame and never trailed in the contest. Fort Hays State out hit the Jennies 8-7 but also recorded two errors in the contest.
In the third inning, UCM had runners on first and second with only one out for Groves, who ripped a triple to the right field corner that scored both. Martin then hit her home and a RBI.
With runners on second and third and one out, Young forced the Tiger infield to throw the ball around and plate both runners. Then in the sixth inning, Young came to the plate with two outs and a runner on first and belted her first home run of her UCM career to left field.
Young went 2-of-3 in the contest, with two runs scored and two RBI. Groves also had two hits in the game, scoring once and hitting in two.
Sophomore
Sarah Espy recorded her fifth win of the season, giving up two runs and scattering the eight hits. She walked one batter and struck out two.
