TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – No. 5-ranked Central Missouri Mules Baseball scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and earn a 6-3 victory over the Northeastern State RiverHawks in game two of a three-game MIAA series on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Rousey Field.
With the win, the Mules (10-2, 2-0 MIAA) secure the series win over the RiverHawks (4-7, 0-2 MIAA). The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. in Tahlequah.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the ninth inning,
Drew Veatch smacked an RBI single to right field, driving in pinch-runner
Lincoln Stephenson, cutting the NSU lead to 3-2, before
Grant Hollister hit an infield single to the pitcher, allowing
Cole Funkhouser to cross home plate and tie the game, 3-3.
Chase Wilcox provided the big hit in the inning, belting a two-run, go-ahead single to left field, scoring
Kaiden Ashton and Veatch, putting the Mules in front, 5-3.
Jackson Helberg worked a bases-loaded walk that allowed Hollister to score for UCM's sixth run of the game.
Hollister went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, and an RBI. Wilcox was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Ryker Edwards was 1-for-4. Veatch was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, pacing UCM at the plate.
Central Missouri relief pitcher
Sam Wyrick (1-0) earned the win on the mound after giving up no earned runs on just one hit with four strikeouts and one walk in 1 2/3 innings of work.
For the game, the Mules tallied six runs on seven hits with zero errors while holding Northeastern State to just three runs on four hits with an error.
