EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Missouri Jennies Basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped after falling to the Emporia State University Lady Hornets, 76-70, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17, inside William L. White Auditorium.
The Jennies (12-5, 6-2 MIAA) are scheduled to return home to the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center in Warrensburg, Mo., to host Missouri Western State University (6-11, 2-6 MIAA) on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 p.m.
Central Missouri led 49-45 with 3:19 to go in the third quarter before the Lady Hornets ended the quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 55-50 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Emporia State (9-8, 3-5 MIAA) would stretch its lead to as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter before the Jennies mounted a late comeback attempt, pulling within 72-70 with 39 seconds to go after
Reese Schaaf converted a layup, was fouled, and made the bonus free-throw. That was as close as UCM would get, though, as Emporia State went a perfect 4-of-4 at the free-throw line in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Hayden Heim netted a career-high 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor, Schaaf scored 17 points and snagged 10 rebounds for her team-high seventh double-double of the season, and
Makenzie Farmer had 11 points, leading UCM in the game.
For the contest, the Jennies shot 36 percent from the field (24-of-66) but were just 9-of-36 from three-point ranges (25 percent) and 13-of-19 at the free-throw line (68 percent). Emporia State outrebounded UCM, 43-34, and outscored Central Missouri in the paint, 44-22.
Kaitlyn Sanders had 22 points, and Vanessa Coleman compiled 18 points, leading Emporia State.
