PITTSBURG, Kan. – A six-run fifth inning came back to haunt No. 8-ranked Central Missouri Mules baseball in a 6-5 loss to the Pittsburg State Gorillas in the opening game of a three-game MIAA series Friday, April 14, at Al Ortolani Field.
Central Missouri (28-11, 19-6 MIAA) and Pittsburg State (28-11, 19-6 MIAA) are scheduled to play game two of the series Saturday, April 15, at 3 p.m.
Carter Young went 2-for-4 with two homers and two RBI, raising his season home run total to 12,
Cole Moore was 2-for-4 with his fourth homer of 2023 and a pair of runs driven in, and
Mason Lowe added two hits in four at bats, leading the Mules at the plate in the game.
UCM right-handed starting pitcher
Conner Wolf (7-3) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up six earned runs on just three hits with five strikeouts, three walks and four hit batters in six innings.
Karson Coffee delivered what proved to the game-winning hit, a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning, while Austin Warkins was 2-for-3, pacing the Gorillas offensively.
Pittsburg State left-handed starter Zac Shoemaker (8-0) earned the win on the rubber after giving up two earned runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work.
