WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Missouri Mules baseball secured a three-game, MIAA series sweep of the Newman Jets after posting an 8-4 victory Monday, March 20, at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
The Mules (19-7, 11-2 MIAA) are scheduled to travel to Claremore, Okla., for a three-game conference series at Rogers State (17-8, 6-7 MIAA) March 24-26.
Central Missouri scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and earn the 8-4 triumph.
Carter Young broke the stalemate in the seventh, belting an 0-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for his seventh home run of the season, before
Vance Tobol hit a single to left field, allowing
John Prudhom to score for a 6-4 Central Missouri lead.
Brett Grupe delivered two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, slashing a two-run double down the right field line, plating
Adamo Stornello and
Mason Lowe and giving the Mules the 8-4 edge.
Young, Grupe and Tobol each had two hits, with Grupe driving in three runs, and Young and Tobol each batting in two, pacing UCM at the plate.
Central Missouri reliever
Jack Payne (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after allowing two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Jason Schneider had three hits and Eli Wohl homered and went 2-for-2, leading Newman (11-16, 5-8 MIAA) offensively.
