Jennies Split MIAA Opener Against SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. (March 9, 2018) - Central Missouri Jennies Softball opened up MIAA play Friday afternoon on the road with a doubleheader against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. The Jennies split the series with the Bearcats dropping game one, 6-1, and winning game two, 8-0. Central Missouri is now 9-13 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.

Game Two: Central Missouri 8, Southwest Baptist 0
Play-by-Play

• The Jens put up their eight runs on seven hits with six RBI. They held the Bearcats (7-12, 1-1 MIAA) to five hits and left six runners stranded. 
• It was in the second inning where UCM did the most damage scoring five of its eight runs on four hits.
Courtni Smith led off the second with a single to center field. She then stole second. A throwing error and sacrifice hit by Kaitlyn Markin scored her.
Allie Dishinger was plated home by an RBI single from Alexis Koop to give the Jens a 2-0 lead.
Brie Murray reached on a fielder's choice and got to second on a wild pitch. Taylor Dames got a base hit up the middle to plate home Murray.
• The next two UCM runs came off an Emily King single to left field. Her hit scored Dames and both King and Lauryn Deer advanced on the throw, which allowed Deer to score.
• The Bearcats had all five of their hits come after the first inning, but the Jennies pitching and fielding proved to be the difference maker.
• The final three UCM runs all came in the seventh. UCM had just one hit in the top of the inning, while three SBU errors help them extend the lead.
• Deer reached on a fielding error at second base. She advanced on a Dames single. Another SBU error got King on base and loaded the bases up for Payton Summers.
• Summers grounded out to the short stop to advance the runners and score Deer. Smith then had a flyout to right field that was dropped which allowed Dames and pinch runner Brenlyn McCoy to score and seal the game.

Jennies Stat Leaders
Shelby Clark pitched complete game in the circle. She allowed five hits, while striking out two. She improves to 2-1 on the year.
• Dames went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. She also had a stolen base.
• Smith finished 2-4 with a run scored. She had a game-high two stolen bases.
• Markin and Koop both went 1-3 on the day with an RBI apiece.
• King had one hit in four at bats, with two RBI.

For the Bearcats
• Kaley Hansen was 1-3 and was left on base six times and struck out once.
• Stormy Greathouse, Payton Wildeman and Miranda Aguilar all went 1-3 as well. Each one was left on base.
• Hunter Middleton picked up the loss in the circle to fall to 2-3. She gave up four hits and four runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Play-by-Play

• The Bearcats took game one with the help of  a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. The Jens had one more hit, 6-5, while both teams had two errors.
• The other two runs for SBU came in the first inning. With two outs Payton Wildeman knocked a single down the right field line to score Stormy Greathouse.
• Wildeman stole second to get in scoring position and she was brought home on an Emily Hall single to right center.
Courtni Smith got on base thanks to an SBU field error to leadoff the second. She stole second and two batters later she scored on a Alexis Koop double to left center. 
• The Jens had just two hits in the next three innings and struggled to find rhythm.
• The Bearcats managed to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth after a muffed throw, a single and a fielding error. Wildeman then hit a grand slam to left center to open up the game, 6-1.
• UCM put up three more hits, but left 11 runners on base for the game, which proved to be the difference maker. SBU had just two runners stranded.

Jennies Stat Leaders
Taylor Dames was the only Jen to have more than one hit as she finished 2-3. 
• Koop went 1-3 with an RBI.
• Smith was also 1-3 with a run scored. 
Katie Giacone suffered the loss to fall to 2-4. She allowed five hits and six runs, two which that were earned.

For the Bearcats
• Wildeman finished 2-3 with two runs scored, a home run and five RBI.
• Jaidyn Mawhinney also went 2-3 with a run scored.
• Hall had the final hit for SBU and was 1-3 on the day with an RBI.
• Claire Miller pitched a complete game to pick up the win. She struck out nine batters and had just three walks in 33 batters faced.

News and Notes
• The Jennies shutout win in game two is their second shutout if the season. 
• UCM is now 84-22 all-time against SBU and 23-9 against them under Susan Anderson.
Taylor Dames four total hits on the day are a career-high for combined hits in a one day two-game series.
• The Jennies nine stolen bases in game two matches their season-high.

Up Next
• The Jennies will remain in-state next weekend as they head to St. Joseph for the Missouri Western Regional Crossover on March 16-18. The Jennies will play six games over the three day span. Their first opponent will be the Augustana Vikings. Game time is set for 12 p.m. on Friday March 16.
