Mules Open up MIAA Action with 24-20 Win Over Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (Jan. 9, 2018)-- Central Missouri Mules Wrestling opened up MIAA dual action with a 24-20 road win over the Newman Jets on Tuesday night. Five wrestlers scored wins as the Mules picked up their third dual win of the season.

Kaleb Warner and Jesse Reser led the way for UCM with wins by way of pin at 149 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively. UCM also got wins from Zachary Schridde, Allan Person, and Dominique Hampton to secure the overall dual win.

Both teams started the night open at 125 pounds. Actual mat action did not get underway until the 149 pound weight class. The Mules forfeited at 133 pounds, giving the Jets a 6-0 lead, but it did not last long as they forfeited the very next match. Schridde earned the forfeit win at 141 pounds and it was a 6-6 tie.

Warner gave the Mules their first lead at 149 pounds with a pin over Jake Hattabaugh in 4:27. With a 12-6 lead, the Mules looked to stay in front, but the Jets kept things interesting. Dominic Nobile dropped a 14-3 major decision to Mario Rodriguez at 157 pounds and at the midway point, UCM held a slim 12-10 lead over Newman.

The Mules won the next two weight classes to establish their first double digit lead. At 165 pounds, Reser pinned his opponent Kyle Ryan in 4:49 making it 18-10, Mules. Person kept things going for UCM scoring a tough 9-8 decision at 174 pounds over Nate Panagakis. With three weight classes left, UCM led 21-10.

Martin Brunnert fell at 184 pounds to Noel Torres by way of a 13-2 major decision. The Jets cut the Mules lead to seven, 21-14, with a chance to potentially win with two matches left. Hampton secured the Mules win at 197 pounds with an 11-7 major decision over Jacob Stoneberger. Chase Miller was pinned in 2:56 at 385 pounds, but it was not enough for the Jets as the Mules secured the four point win.

UCM will have a short break as the team is back in action tomorrow, Jan. 10, in Edmond, Okla., to take on the No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos. Mat action will get underway at 7 p.m.
