LAWRENCE, Kan. (April 20, 2017) – Central Missouri sent a handful of athletes to compete at the famous Kansas Relays this weekend. UCM's portion got started Thursday afternoon and evening and continued throughout Saturday. UCM had three winners at the meet, one each day.
Thursday started with a bang as Jacob Mahin won the collegiate shot put throwing 56-6.75. Nathan Cummings and Dalton Lewallen also took top-10 finishes in the event. Cummings was fifth with a throw of 53-7 and Lewallen placed ninth at 52-4.75. John Berry was 16th throwing 48-2.
Friday saw Brittany Kallenberger clear 12-3.5 to win the pole vault competition. Teammate Kaylee VanBlarcum jumped 11-9.75 and finished in second place based on number of attempts.
UCM only had one athlete compete on Saturday, Kailey Fuchs in the 800m. She was in the seeded portion of the race and was victorious running 2:11.21 against multiple NCAA Division I competitors and others from the MIAA. The time is an outdoor personal-best for Fuchs and is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Amy Dorge had a successful weekend in the throws placing in the top-10 in three events over two days. First, she placed fifth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 45-10.75, which moves her into third place all-time at UCM. It is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and is ties her for the fourth-best throw in the MIAA this season.
Dorge wasn't finished though. She also set a new personal-best in the hammer throw with her eighth place finish of 170-5. That puts her in fifth place at UCM and moves her up to the fourth-best throw in the MIAA.
Friday, Dorge competed in the discus and earned her third top-10 finish of the weekend. She placed 10th throwing 138-4.
The Mules had two top-five finishes in the hammer throw. Nathan Liby took second throwing 195-9 and Jace Kaleikau was right behind him in third throwing 193-3. Cummings finished 12th in the event at 168-5 while Berry was 14th at 167-6 and Lewallen 19th at 161-4.
Cummings and Mahin threw the discus on Friday for the Mules. Cummings had another top-10 finish placing seventh throwing 156 feet. Mahin took 16th in the event, throwing the disc 145-3.
On the track, the Jennies also saw some personal-bests. Amy Marx ran a PR for the 3K steeple finishing 13th in 11:48.62. Courtney Rogers was 12th in the 1500m running 4:56.99, her best at UCM.
UCM had a Mule and Jennie in the 5K races. Nicole Svendsen got on the track first and ran a personal-best 18:03.21 to finish 10th. Hughes ran 15:26.30 and was 11th in the first heat.
In the 800m Maria Wendell ran 2:25.08, just shy of her personal-best, and placed 21st.
The rest of the UCM Track and Field team will compete Sunday, April 23 at the Missouri S&T Dewey Allgood Invitational.
