Tip Off
• Central Missouri started their 2017-18 season with a pair of wins over Northern Sun schools Mary and Northern State two weeks ago in Kansas City.
• The Jennies suffered their first loss of the season, a tough 77-76 decision Sunday to Arkansas-Fort Smith at the Central Missouri Classic. They defeated William Jewell 66-56 on Saturday.
• In the latest WBCA rankings (Week 1, Nov. 21), the Jennies moved up to No. 12 following their 4-1 start. However, the Jens fell out of the Division II Media Rankings and into the receiving votes category, as a would-be No. 26. The next set of National Coaches and Media polls will be released later Tuesday afternoon.
Story Lines
• Central Missouri is 2-0 all-time against in-state rival, Harris-Stowe. The two teams haven't met since the 2005-06 season.
• The Jennies are currently in the middle of a six game homestand. They've started out 2-1 with their win last Tuesday. The homestand will wrap up next weekend with Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western to start out conference play.
Quick Hits
Last Time Out
Central Missouri made quick work of their last NAIA opponent, Evangel with an 81-30 win. The lead was never in doubt and the Jens pulled away with a 25-3 second quarter.
Peyton Taylor and
Gigi McAtee were the Jennies leaders. Taylor scored 11 with a career-high eight rebounds. McAtee scored 10 going 4-5 from the field with two three-pointers.
Previously vs. Evangel
The Jennies last played Harris-Stowe in December of 2005. Central Missouri won that game 92-38. The Jennies are 2-0 all-time against Harris-Stowe.
Jennies in the Rankings
The Jennies were ranked in the top-15 in two preseason rankings. In week one, they moved up in one poll, and fell out of the top-25 in another. Central Missouri was ranked 12th in the first week of the WBCA Coaches Poll, taking into account the first two weeks of the regular season. They were the top team in the "receiving votes" category of the D2 Media Poll.
Around the MIAA
• Seven teams have at least five wins already this season and six are still undefeated with another three at 4-1 or better.
• The conference season starts up this weekend, even though the Jennies first MIAA games come next weekend. Several teams play a Thursday-Saturday slate as the MIAA season heats up.
• With 8.0 rebounds per game
Kayonna Lee is 10th in the MIAA.
•
Morgan Fleming and
Paige Redmond are each in the top-20 in points per game averaging more than 13 a contest.
• Opponents are shooting 36.6% from three against UCM, the third-highest in the league. Arkansas-Fort Smith shot 60% from three last Sunday, the first time since 2009 a UCM opponent shot 60% from beyond the arc.
Rare Loss
Jennies Coach
Dave Slifer has now played in 15 one-point game in his career at UCM and his loss Sunday to Arkansas-Fort Smith was just the fifth he has suffered.
Individual Milestones
•
Kelsey Williams surpassed 200 career points in the Jennies season opener against Mary and went over 100 assists against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Next up is 100 rebounds, of which she is seven shy.
• With three more free throw attempts
Sydney Crockett will hit her 100th of her career. If she knocks in all three, she will be shooting exactly 80%, 80-100.
•
Kayonna Lee grabbed her 100th career rebound last weekend and needs just one more point for 300. With two more field goals, she will also have made 100 for her career.
•
Paige Redmond needs eight more three pointers to make the UCM all-time top-10 list in three pointers made.
•
Emilie Jobst's two free throws against Evangel were the first free throw attempts of her career.
Ball Security
At just 11.7 turnovers per game, the Jennies are one of the best in Division II, ranking second in the conference and 11th in the NCAA. Fort Hays' 9.0 turnovers per game is the best in both the MIAA and NCAA. UCM has fewer than 10 turnovers in each of their last two games and only once have turned it over more than 11 times.
Staying Clean
Opponents have taken just 60 free throw attempts against the Jennies in five games and for good reason. The Jennies are committing just 13.0 fouls per game which is the best in the MIAA and eighth in the NCAA.
Block Party
Central Missouri hasn't had much to brag about in recent years when it comes to blocks, but they saw their blocking numbers rise big time last weekend and again on Tuesady. The Jennies blocked five William Jewell shots, getting a career-best three from
Morgan Fleming and two from
Kayonna Lee. Lee doubled up with another two block effort against Arkansas-Fort Smith and UCM blocked nine shots against Evangel, getting three from both Lee and
Sydney Skaggs.
Table for Three
Central Missouri leads the MIAA in three point field goal percentage at 38.3%.
Paige Redmond (9-17) and
Sydney Crockett (9-16) have been the leaders of the three-point barrage with 18 of the 41.
Morgan Fleming has seven and
Kelsey Williams has added six.
Gigi McAtee is quickly becoming a sharp-shooter hitting on 4-of-8 3FG.
