ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Nov. 18, 2017)-- Central Missouri Mules Wrestling had two athletes place in their respective weight classes Saturday afternoon at the Lindenwood Open. Kaleb Brooks and
Zach Benner both finished sixth at 157 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively.
Brooks wrestled in the Black Division which was composed of freshman and sophomore athletes. He got his day started with a 7-5 decision over Sean Butler of Ouachita Baptist. He carried his momentum into match No. 2 with an 11-3 major decision over Austin Morgan of Missouri Valley College. Brooks third win came via another decision, this time 8-5, over Elijah Davis of Purdue. Things got a bit rough for Brooks as he was pinned the semifinals in 48 seconds and moved over to the consolation bracket. He was not able to turn things around as he ultimately dropped his final two matches, both by decision, to end the day 3-3.
Benner also wrestled in the Black Division at 197 pounds. His day was exactly like Brooks. He won his first three matches of the day, but dropped his next three to finish sixth. He won his first match due to an injury default by Jared McKindley of Lindenwood at the 3:30 mark. In the second round, he scored a 15-4 major decision over Tanner Hawkins of Ouachita Baptist to move to 2-0. Match No. 3 saw Benner win by a 6-3 decision over Drew McCollum of Hannibal La-Grange. In the semifinals he dropped a 6-3 decision to move to the consolation side of the bracket. He was pinned in his final two matches at 2:38 and 1:04, respectively.
Three UCM wrestlers did finish the day at 2-2 at the tournament in
Dominique Hampton, Kaleb Warner, and
Dylan Bollinger. Hampton scored both of his wins by way of decision. Warner's win were via a medical forfeit and decision, while Bollinger's were by a major decision and decision.
The Mules will have a week off before hitting the mat again. Their next competition will be a dual against Ouachita Baptist in Springdale, Ark., on Nov. 29. Mat action set for 7 p.m.
