Jennies Pound Out 17 Runs and 18 Hits in Sweep of Missouri Southern

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Central Missouri overcame a five-run deficit in game one and scored 10 runs in game two on their way to a sweep of Missouri Southern Wednesday afternoon at Jennies Field. UCM has now won seven of their last nine games and are a season-best four games over .500 at 18-14 and are 7-3 in the MIAA.

Game One: Central Missouri 7, Missouri Southern 6

The two teams combined to score 12 runs in the first two innings, but only one in the following five. Allison Tonyan got the start for Central Missouri and surrendered six runs before getting six outs, and putting UCM in a 6-1 hole. Myranda Stewart hit a towering fly ball that just stayed inside the foul pole for a grand slam in the second inning.

The Jennies though quickly recovered, scoring five of their own in the bottom half of the inning. UCM used a couple of Lion miscues to score two runs, before an Alex Leonhart two-RBI double and Emily Robinson RBI single tied the game at six.

Central Missouri took their first lead of the game the following inning when Katie Giacone scored on Makayla Schoonover's RBI groundout.

Tonyan settled down after a rocky first two innings giving up just five more hits in five innings. She was helped out by some sparkling Jennies defense, including a pair of infield double-plays to get her out of trouble.

With a runner on second and two outs in the top of the seventh, Taurean Guzman laced a grounder that was ticketed for left field, but Emily King made a diving stop to her left and threw from her knees to get the runner and end the game.

Tonyan ended up throwing all seven innings to pick up her third straight win and move to 5-4 on the season. She gave up nine hits and six runs, four earned while striking out two and walking four.

The Jennies collected 10 hits, three from Lauren Mabe and two from King. Leonhart, Robinson and Schoonover all had two RBI.

Ashley Lutz started for MSSU and suffered the loss pitching three innings, giving up seven runs, three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Guzman threw three innings of one-hit relief with a strikeout. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Stewart finished 1-for-4 with a run and four RBI.

Game Two: Central Missouri 10, Missouri Southern 6

The Lions again took a one-run lead in the first off of Jennies starter Robinson on Stewart's two-out RBI single.

That lead quickly disappeared though as Lauren Mabe pulled a ball over the right-center field fence for a two-run home run, her fourth of the season. The Jens added to their lead in the second, scoring two more runs without getting a hit. Austin Eickleberry, pinch-running after Robinson walked, scored on Alexis Koop's RBI fielder's choice and Brittany Kendall scored as Koop was thrown out attempting to steal second.

Missouri Southern didn't go away, scoring three in the third to tie the game at 4-4. All three runs scored with two outs. Alana Hester scored from second on Stewart's infield single and Sarah Williams blooped a two-RBI single to center, evening the score.

With one swing of the bat in bottom of the inning, UCM jumped right back out in front. The Jennies loaded the bases with nobody out, forcing an MSSU pitching change, and Allie Dishinger greeted Guzman with a grand slam to left, putting Central Missouri up 8-4.

The Lions scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to get to within two, 8-6, but the Jens got some insurance in the fifth scoring two runs on three hits as Dishinger scored on a passed ball and Robinson scored on Koop's RBI infield single, to go up by the final score, 10-6.

Missouri Southern got a runner on in the sixth and seventh, but Robinson allowed no more, picking up her seventh win of the season.

Robinson went all seven innings giving up 10 hits and six runs, four earned. She struck out one and walked one while throwing 112 pitches. She also reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

The Jens knocked eight hits, getting two apiece from Mabe and Dishinger. They also accounted for six of UCM's eight RBI, with Koop picking up the other two.

Southern starter Kali Hodson took the loss in the circle lasting two innings giving up seven earned runs on four hits with a strikeout and two walks. Ashley Lutz threw an effective 1.1 innings of hitless relief striking out one and walking one.

Hester finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Jennies hit the road for a doubleheader in Bolivar, Mo. against Southwest Baptist Friday, March 25. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
