HAYS, Kan. -- The Mules Wrestling team fell to Fort Hays State 44-9 Wednesday evening, in the final dual of the 2015-16 season.
The Mules found themselves in an early hole 6-0 by forfeiting at 125.
Fort Hays quickly jumped out to an 18-0 lead after Anthony Calderon at 133 and Noah Killip at 141 scored a pair of fall victories over
Daide Agnew and
Caleb Crabtree respectively.
The lead grew to 30-0 after the Mules went open at 149 pounds, and Joey Dozier pinned
Dylan Lewis in the first period at 157 pounds.
Allan Person lost a close 4-3 decision to Kregg Clarke at 165 pounds, which gave the Tigers a 33-0 lead.
Seventh-ranked
Archie Williams put the Mules on the board with a first period pin of Nathan Shipley at 174 pounds. The win was his seventh in a row, and cut the lead to 33-6.
At 184 pounds, sixth-ranked Jon Inman pinned
Tyler Nelson in the first period, pushing the lead back to 33 points at 39-6.
Robert Schneider fell to Cash Drylie at 197 in an 18-1 tech fall, giving Fort Hays State a 44-9 lead.
In the final match of the night,
Nick Lovejoy earned a 5-3 decision victory over Dakota Gulley at 285 to make the final score 44-9.
The loss drops the Mules to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA, while the win improves Fort Hays State to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA.
The Mules will be back in action Feb. 14 in St. Charles, Missouri at the MIAA Championship Tournament.
