Jennies Basketball Begins MIAA Play Saturday at Missouri Western

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Central Missouri Jennies Basketball takes their six-game winning streak on the road to open up MIAA play against Missouri Western Saturday, Dec. 3 in St. Joseph, Mo.

Opponent: Missouri Western (7-1, 1-0 MIAA) - Saturday, Dec. 3, 2 p.m.

Tip Off:
• The Jennies start MIAA play this week with a road game at Missouri Western.
• Last season the Jennies went 9-13 in the MIAA, winning an MIAA Tournament opening round game before falling in the quarterfinal round.
• Central Missouri went 3-0 last week in Florida, defeating Embry-Riddle and Barry on the road and Johnson and Wales in a neutral site game. UCM is 2-0 on the road this season and 3-0 in neutral site games. 

Story Lines:
• Central Missouri is riding a six-game winning streak and are 6-1 through the month of November. Their best start to a season since opening the 2013-14 season at 12-1.
• The Jennies are 34-29 all-time against the Griffons, however just 11-19 in St. Joseph. The Griffons swept the season series with UCM last season and have won three of the last four matchups. Prior to their win in Jan. 2015, the Jennies had won 13 straight games.
• Head Coach Dave Slifer became the winningest coach in Jennies history with his win vs. Arkansas-Fort Smith, passing Jon Pye's 228 wins at UCM.

Last Time Out

Central Missouri went 3-0 in Florida with wins at Embry-Riddle and Barry and a neutral site win over Johnson and Wales. The wins move the Jennies to 6-1 and give them a six-game winning streak.

Previously vs. Missouri Western
The Jennies and Griffons last met in the 2015-16 regular season finale with Missouri Western sweeping the season series with a 77-61 win. Shelby Winkelman led UCM scoring 24 points while Paige Redmond chipped in 11. Sydney Crockett scored eight and was 6-6 at the FT line. 

Jennies on the Road
The Jennies played two road games last week in Florida, defeating Embry-Riddle 67-50 and Barry 67-53. Central Missouri was 5-9 away in road games last season and 4-7 in MIAA road contests. 

Inside the Winning Streak
Since dropping their first game of the season, Central Missouri has won six in a row. It's their longest winning streak since winning nine straight in February and March of 2015. In four of the six games, the Jens have reached 70 points and have scored at least 89 points in three of those games. 

Hitting the Century Mark
In their final game in Florida, Central Missouri dropped 108 points on Johnson and Wales in a 108-45 win over the Wildcats. The 108 points scored are the most ever by a Dave Slifer coached Jennies team and the first time reaching 100 since Feb. 4 2006 against Central Methodist. It is the 32nd time in their history UCM has topped 100 points and their most points since scoring 110 against Quincy, No.v 14, 1998. In the win, all 11 Jennies that played scored and five reached double-digits. UCM hit 14 three-pointers in the game while forcing 28 Wildcat turnovers. 

Among the Leaders
Central Missouri is one of three MIAA teams averaging more than 80 points per game this season, scoring 81.7 points, which is 21st in the NCAA. Their 44% field goal percentage is fifth in the MIAA, 39.9% from three is third and 13th in the NCAA and they lead the conference shooting  79.4% at the free throw line, 12th in the nation.
 
Individually, the Jennies have three players averaging more than 10 points per game with Paige Redmond's 15.7 PPG leading the way, ranking 10th in the conference. Redmond is also in the MIAA in field goal percentage (49.3% - 9th), three-point percentage (41.2% - 8th) and free throw percentage (86.7% - 4th). Ashley Duffy is scoring 13.3 points per game, and her 48.7% from three is fourth in the MIAA. 

Lee is also in the MIAA top-10 in a pair of categories. She too ranks in the top-10 in free throw percentage with her 81.8% checking in a No. 10. On the glass, Lee is eighth grabbing 7.7 rebounds per game.

Ball Protection 
In all seven games this season, the Jennies have been on the plus-side of the turnover battle. The Jennies are ranked 10th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game, giving the ball away just 12.3 times per game. They are also 13th in turnover margin at plus-8.43. 

Highway Robbery
Not only have the Jennies been holding on to the ball, they've also been adept at taking it away from their opponents. UCM is third in the MIAA and 18th in Division II with 77 steals this season. Three Jennies are in the MIAA top-15 in steals per game. Morgan Fleming is seventh with 2.1 steals per game, Lee is 11th with 1.9 and Redmond 13th with 1.7. Last season, Duffy led the MIAA with 2.1 steals per game. 

Threes Company
The Jennies have not been shy about pulling the trigger when it comes to three-pointers. UCM has taken 163 3FG attempts this season, 21st in the NCAA. But they've also been successful hitting 65 for the seventh most in the nation. Their 39.9% on three's is just outside the NCAA top-10 putting them 13th. Ashley Duffy is fourth in the MIAA hitting 48.7% of her three pointers and her 19 made threes are 22nd in the country. 

Scouting the Opposition
Missouri Western Griffons

• Missouri Western has started the year at 7-1 and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. The Griffons only loss came to Minnesota-Mankato, 65-54.
• The Griffons opened up conference play Wednesday night with a 74-50 win over Northeastern State. Three Griffons scored in double-figures led by Savannah Lentz with 14.
• Two Griffons are averaging more than 10 points a game this season. Dwanisha Tate is scoring 13.8 points per game to lead MWSU and Chelsea Dewey is scoring 12.6 points per game. 
• As a team, Missouri Western is shooting 42.5% from the field while connecting on 36.5% of their three-point FGs and 73.3% of their free throws. Lentz is 3rd in the MIAA hitting 48.8% of her 3-point attempts.
• Julia Torres leads the Griffons rebounding attack, grabbing eight boards per game, sixth in the MIAA. She's done a lot of damage on the offensive end, picking up 3.5 offensive rebounds per game which is second in the conference. Her 64 total rebounds are the tops in the MIAA.
• Missouri Western is the top-team in the MIAA in terms of turnover margin at a plus-10.13. The Griffons are averaging just 13.4 turnovers per game while forcing a conference-best 23.5 turnovers. MWSU uses the quick hands of Sefullu Faavar and Torres, 2nd and third in the MIAA in steals, to swipe 12.25 steals. 
• Dewey is not only second on the team in scoring but leads Missouri Western with 42 assists per game. Faavae is close behind with 34.
• Missouri Western is getting out-blocked by opponents 21-17 this season. Torres however is in the MIAA top-10 with 1.0 blocks per game and leads the Griffons with eight.
