Jennies softball splits with Southwest Baptist for second straight day

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Jennies softball team earned a doubleheader split with Southwest Baptist for the second-consecutive day on Saturday, winning 16-4 in five innings in game one, while dropping a 9-5 decision in game two. 

Junior Jakki Prater added two homeruns to go with five RBI on the day to move into first-place on the Jennies' all-time list in both categories. She now owns 31 homeruns and 127 RBI in her career at Central Missouri. 

In game one, after falling behind, 1-0 in the top of the first, the Jennies (25-17, 12-8 MIAA) answered with a three-spot in the home half. Prater grounded out, plating a run in the process, followed by an RBI double from Alex Groeger. Lauren Mabe closed out the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, plating Groeger to make it a 3-1 game.

The game was put in doubt by the Jennies in the bottom of the second with nine runs crossing home plate. 14 UCM batters made a plate appearance and the offense manufactured nine runs on nine hits. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Braylyn Bivens and a three-run homer by Jill Lucas

SBU scored once in the top of the third on a bases-loaded walk by Rachel Wilson to make it a 12-2 game in favor of the Jennies. 

In the bottom of the third, UCM added four runs on a solo homerun from Prater, a sacrifice fly by Lucas and a two-run double by Alex Leonhart

The Bearcats' final runs came in the top of the fourth on a two run single by Caitlyn Cooner, cementing the run-rule victory for the Jennies after five innings. 

Jennies starting pitcher Katie Shockley (10-2) earned the win, allowing five hits, four runs (all earned), four walks and six strikeouts. 

Ali Jo Rogers went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, while Prater, King and Lucas each chipped in two hits apiece.

In game two, SBU pounced on UCM starter Jessica Wilkes in the first two innings, scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, with Mabe on first and Alex Groeger on third, Lucas reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Groeger to score. 

The Jennies closed to within 4-3 in the bottom of the third following Prater's second homerun of the afternoon, a two-run shot. 

The Bearcats manufactured three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth, capped off on a three-run homerun by Lyndie Routh to put SBU ahead, 7-3. SBU added two more in the top of the seventh after a wild pitch scored a run and an RBI single by Jordan Gray. 

UCM battled to get back into the game in the last of the seventh, but were retired after scoring two following a fielding error and an RBI double by Groeger.

In game two, Groeger was the only Jennie to record a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. 

Wilkes took the loss in game two, her sixth of the season. 

The Jennies will make their final road trip of the regular season when they travel to Emporia State to take on the Lady Hornets on Tuesday, April 15 for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
