ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Jennies softball team fell to Wayne State College, 11-10 in nine innings and 5-4 to Augustana College on the Missouri Western Regional Crossover's first day.
UCM (12-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth in game one against Wayne State College.
Lindsey Dawson and
Alex Groeger drove in the first three runs with the fourth run coming during
Jakki Prater's at-bat that resulted in a fielder's choice.
Wayne State College came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a fielding error by
Emily King that allowed a run to score with two outs.
The Wildcats tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, sending nine hitters to the plate and manufacturing five hits.
After
Braylyn Bivens drew a one-out walk and Dawson singled, Groeger singled up the middle, plating Bivens from second base to tie the game at 5-5.
The Jennies scored four times during extra softball in the top of the eighth, sparked by RBI hits from
Ali Jo Rogers, Bivens and Dawson.
Wayne State College responded in the bottom of the eighth with four runs of its own. After Prater came in to pitch for
Jessica Wilkes and recorded two outs with a one-run lead and runners at the corners, she got Sam O'Brien to strike out swinging, but
Kristen Heil dropped the swinging third strike and reached base, allowing the tying run from third to come home.
Again, the Jennies re-gained the lead in the top of the ninth thanks to a passed ball that plated Prater from third base, who was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
The game-winning runs for Wayne State College came across in the bottom of the ninth, after a one-out single by Megan Hagemann plated a pair of runners in scoring position.
Groeger and Rogers both finished with two hits and combined for five RBI's in the first game.
In game two, UCM faced off with the fifth-ranked team in the country and scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer by Prater.
Two innings later, Prater homered in her second-straight at-bat, giving her 14 on the season and spotting the Jennies a 3-0 lead.
Augustana College jumped in front with a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate. UCM hit two batters in the inning and committed an error in center, allowing one of the runs to score.
UCM threatened to tie the game in their last at-bat in the seventh inning after Prater doubled home her fourth run of the game, but
Madison Hood struck out swinging, stranding Prater at second base.
Prater went 5-for-8 with two homeruns, 7 RBI's and two runs scored on the afternoon. Her 14 homeruns this season are now second on the Jennies' single-season list, trailing only Rachel Adams, who hit 16 in 2006. Prater moved into a second-place tie with Adams on UCM's career homeruns list with 25.
The Jennies will look to rebound tomorrow when they play St. Cloud State at 11 a.m. and Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. from Memorial Park.
