WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Jennies softball team opened its 2014 home schedule with a split against Missouri Western. UCM lost the first game, 6-2 and came back to win the nightcap, 7-6 in eight innings.
In game one, the Jennies fell behind, 2-0 in the first inning after a single from Brook Schaben plated two runs.
UCM got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the first on an RBI double by
Alex Groeger.
A leadoff homerun by Sydney Washington in the top of the third provided Missouri Western with a 3-1 lead.
Kristen Heil slammed a solo homerun in the fourth inning to bring the Jennies to within a run at 3-2, but the Griffons tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to take game one, 6-2.
Jakki Prater (6-3) took the loss, going the distance and allowing 11 hits on six runs (four earned). She fanned two and did not issue a walk.
In game two, Missouri Western got on the board first in the second inning, scoring four times off of UCM starter,
Katie Shockley.
UCM responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the second, led by a three-run homerun off the bat of Prater, her team-leading 10th on the season.
Braylyn Bivens, in her first action since February 14, singled home
Jessica Neely in the third to bump the Jennies' lead to 6-4.
Missouri Western knotted the game up in the top of the seventh, via a sacrifice fly by Washington and an throwing error on Heil.
The Jennies won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after
Lindsey Dawson led the inning off with a single and scored on a double to left centerfield by Groeger.
Shockley picked up her second straight win to improve to 2-1. The junior went all eight innings, allowing seven hits on six runs (four earned), walking four and fanning five batters.
The Jennies' 1-through-4 hitters went a combined 9-for-19 with a homerun, six RBI's and four runs scored.
UCM will host Northwest Missouri tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
